Chapter 4 - The Armory Cache

The heavy vault door swung wide,
bathing the damp tunnel in a brilliant wash of white LED light.
Rows of carbon-fiber weaponry,
encrypted terminals,
and secured tactical armor lined the reinforced concrete walls.
This was my sanctuary,
hidden three hundred feet beneath the bustling luxury of Fifth Avenue where no federal warrant or rival cartel could ever reach.
“In,
” I commanded,
shoving Mason forward into the brightly lit chamber.
He stumbled over the threshold,
sprawling awkwardly onto the epoxy-coated floor before scrambling backward until his spine hit a rack of assault rifles.
Clara stepped in behind us,
her posture relaxed yet vigilant as she immediately walked toward the central master console.
She docked her silver thumb drive into the primary terminal port.
Lines of green code cascaded down the dual-monitor display in a hypnotic waterfall of data.
“Downloading remaining encrypted logs from Mason’s personal terminal,
” she announced,
her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced precision.
“How long?” I asked,
unbuttoning my blood-spattered cuffs.
“Three minutes,
” she replied without turning around.
“Patrick Sloan is already mobilizing his cleanup crew.
”
“Let them come down here,
” I said coldly,
walking over to a wall rack and lifting a suppressed MP5 submachine gun,
checking the chamber with a satisfying click.
“This vault was designed to withstand a tactical mortar strike.
”
Mason let out a hollow,
hysterical laugh from the corner.
“You think a bunker saves you,
Adrian?” he sneered,
blood staining his white shirt collar.
“Sloan doesn't need to break the door.
”
“He’ll just cut off the municipal power grid,
flood the ventilation shafts with VX nerve gas,
and wait for you to suffocate in your own gold.
”
I turned slowly,
walking over until I stood directly over him,
casting a long,
dark shadow across his trembling form.
“Patrick Sloan lacks the imagination for nerve gas,
” I said softly.
“He’s a smuggler from the docks who got lucky with crooked politicians.
”
“And you were his favorite pet accountant before you decided to bite the hand that fed you your millions.
”
Mason’s jaw tightened,
his eyes flashing with sudden,
burning hatred.
“Pet?” he snarled.
“I made you,
Adrian!”
“Every offshore routing,
every shell company tax shelter,
every bribe laundered through the Cayman Islands—I built the foundation you’re standing on!”
“And yet,
you couldn't resist stealing four point seven million for your retirement fund in Costa Rica,
” I replied,
my voice dripping with icy disdain.
“Greed is a clumsy executioner,
Mason.
”
Clara’s voice cut through the tension like a razor blade.
“Download complete.
”
We both turned toward the central console.
The dual monitors flashed from green to a stark,
blood-red hue as a complete organizational chart of Patrick Sloan’s West River syndicate materialized on screen.
Every corrupt judge.
Every compromised police captain.
Every fentanyl stash house hidden in plain sight across Queens and Brooklyn.
“There it is,
” Clara whispered,
a triumphant smile touching her lips.
“The entire blueprint of Sloan’s operation.
”
“And,
” she added,
tapping the enter key,
“it’s already automatically forwarding to every federal investigative agency,
investigative journalist,
and rival syndicate boss in the Tri-State area.
”
Mason went entirely pale,
his lips parting in silent horror.
“You.
.
.
you just signed all our death warrants.
”
“No,
Mason,
” I said,
resting the barrel of the MP5 against my shoulder.
May you like
“We just signed yours.
”
