Chapter 14 - Flight to the Alps

The private Gulfstream G650 climbed rapidly through the bruised twilight skies above Teterboro Airport,
pointing its nose eastward toward the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps.
Inside the luxurious cabin,
bathed in soft,
recessed amber lighting,
Clara sat across from me with her laptop open on the polished burl wood table.
Spread before us were the encrypted files we had extracted from the Syndicate of the Seven Rings during their failed cyber-probe.
“The Zurich node was just the tip of the iceberg,
” Clara explained,
tapping the screen to bring up a sprawling network graph connecting financial institutions across Geneva,
Zurich,
and Vaduz.
“The Seven Rings aren't just an informal cartel.
”
“They’re a centralized clearinghouse for global capital flight,
illegal arms trafficking,
and political extortion.
”
“And they use a private Swiss banking conglomerate called Edelweiss Trust as their primary laundering vehicle,
” I added,
taking a slow sip of black coffee.
“Precisely,
” she nodded,
adjusting her glasses as the cabin hummed quietly beneath us.
“Edelweiss Trust holds over twelve billion dollars in untraceable assets belonging to the council members.
”
“If we freeze those accounts using the administrative backdoor we discovered in their active directory,
their entire financial infrastructure collapses within forty-eight hours.
”
“And what happens when they realize who locked them out?” I asked.
“They’ll try to liquidate everything and flee to non-extradition jurisdictions.
”
“Which is why we’re landing in Zurich three hours before market open to intercept their primary vault administrator,
” she said,
her voice steady and unyielding.
I leaned back in the leather seat,
studying her in the quiet intimacy of the cabin.
Three weeks ago,
she was just my quiet,
unassuming forensic accountant in the basement offices of Manhattan.
Now,
she was navigating international shadow syndicates and plotting the financial dismantling of a global cabal at thirty thousand feet.
“You’re enjoying this,
aren't you?” I murmured with a faint smile.
Clara paused,
looking up from her screen,
her midnight-blue eyes catching the cabin lights.
“Enjoying putting corrupt billionaires in their place?”
“Absolutely.
”
“Most people would be terrified of the Seven Rings.
”
“Most people don't know how to read a balance sheet,
” she retorted smoothly.
“Numbers don't lie,
Adrian.
”
“People do.
”
“And the Seven Rings have cooked their books for the last fifty years.
”
“It’s time someone finally audited them.
”
The pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom,
announcing our imminent descent into Zurich International Airport amid a crisp,
sub-zero alpine night.
Outside the reinforced cabin windows,
the jagged peaks of the Swiss Alps rose like frozen cathedral spires against a starlit sky.
We were walking straight into the lion's den.
And for the first time in years,
May you like
I wasn't worried about surviving.
I was worried we wouldn't find enough targets to keep up with Clara’s spreadsheets.
