Chapter 17 - Inside the Vault of the Seven Rings

The massive titanium door swung open,

releasing a rush of dry,

climate-controlled air that smelled faintly of old parchment,

minted gold,

and absolute power.

Inside lay the beating heart of the global shadow economy.

Floor-to-ceiling rows of secure glass-fronted cases held bearer bonds,

digital cold-storage wallets,

rare bullion,

and unrecorded bearer titles representing billions of dollars in wealth looted from the global financial system.

Director Hans Keller stood paralyzed in the doorway,

staring into the vault as if witnessing the apocalypse.

“All of this,

” Clara whispered,

stepping over the threshold and scanning the glittering inventory with a critical,

analytical eye.

“Every single cent traceable back to illegal arms deals,

municipal corruption,

and corporate extortion.

”

“Can we freeze it?” I asked,

following her inside.

“Not just freeze it,

” she replied,

pulling her laptop from her leather bag and plugging directly into the vault’s master mainframe.

“We’re transferring ownership to a newly minted international restitution fund managed by global transparency watchdogs.

”

“They’ll never recover a single dollar.

”

Suddenly,

a shrill alarm shrieked through the subterranean chamber.

The harsh white LED strips overhead flashed from white to an urgent,

pulsating crimson.

“Alert! Unauthorized cryptographic override detected!” a synthetic automated voice blared from the ceiling speakers.

“Master depository compromised!”

Keller screamed,

dropping to his knees and covering his head with his hands.

“You’ve triggered the global lockdown!” he yelled over the blaring alarm.

“The council will know within seconds!”

“They should have updated their firewalls ages ago,

” Clara muttered calmly,

her fingers flying across her keyboard with breathtaking speed.

“Executing final transfer script now.

”

A progress bar on her screen raced toward completion: ninety percent,

ninety-five percent,

one hundred percent.

“Transfer complete,

” she announced triumphantly,

ripping the thumb drive from the port.

“Twelve billion dollars just vanished from the Seven Rings and landed in our trust accounts.

”

Before Keller could even draw another breath,

the heavy elevator doors at the end of the vault corridor slid open with a sharp hiss.

Four heavily armed tactical operatives wearing unmarked black ceramic armor and carrying suppressed submachine guns poured out into the hallway.

“Intruders! Drop your weapons!” the lead operative bellowed in German,

raising his weapon toward us.

I didn't hesitate.

With lightning-fast fluidity,

I drew my Sig Sauer and fired twice.

The lead operative dropped instantly,

his armor absorbing the impact but the kinetic shock dropping him to the floor.

I grabbed Clara by the arm,

hauling her behind a massive marble pillar as a hail of suppressed bullets chewed viciously into the stone.

“Welcome to Zurich,

” I muttered,

checking the chamber of my weapon.

“Shall we finish the audit?” Clara asked,

May you like

her eyes shining with reckless,

brilliant adrenaline.
