Chapter 13 - The Zurich Ping

The red-lettered name hung on the dual monitors like a digital omen.
The Syndicate of the Seven Rings.
For decades,
whispered rumors in dark financial circles spoke of an elite council of invisible oligarchs who controlled the global shadow economy from behind Swiss alpine vaults and impenetrable offshore trusts.
They didn't deal in street-level narcotics like Patrick Sloan.
They traded in governments,
central bank currencies,
and corporate monopolies that shaped the geopolitical landscape.
And now,
they were probing our freshly sanitized escrow accounts.
“They’re testing our firewall,
” Clara muttered,
her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with frantic intensity.
“Attempting a distributed denial-of-service attack combined with a quantum decryption sweep.
”
“Can they breach it?” I asked,
leaning over her shoulder as lines of defensive counter-code scrolled across the screen.
“Not easily,
” she replied,
her teeth catching her lower lip in concentration.
“They’re using heavy computational power routed through three different proxy servers in Zurich,
Frankfurt,
and Tokyo.
”
“They think they’re dealing with a standard corporate firewall managed by terrified interns.
”
“Show them who they’re really dealing with,
” I murmured,
my hand resting lightly on the back of her ergonomic chair.
Clara let out a sharp,
breathless laugh,
her eyes flashing with exhilarating challenge.
“Deploying the counter-offensive protocol.
”
She hit the master execute key with the palm of her hand.
The dual monitors suddenly flashed from red to a brilliant,
blinding white,
then settled into a deep,
steady amber.
Across the screens,
complex traceroute maps lit up like Christmas trees.
“We just reverse-engineered their proxy tunnel,
” Clara announced triumphantly,
pointing at a glowing node in Zurich.
“And?”
“And we just downloaded their active directory database,
complete with encrypted communications,
shell corporation directories,
and the names of every high-ranking member sitting on their council.
”
I stared at the scrolling data in absolute silence.
In less than thirty seconds,
Clara Whitmore had just hacked into the most elusive shadow council in the western hemisphere.
“They’re going to realize they’ve been exposed within the hour,
” she noted,
her tone shifting back to professional calm as she exported the database to an encrypted thumb drive.
“When they do,
they won't send a sniper with a red dot.
”
“They’ll send an army.
”
“Let them,
” I said,
standing upright and sliding my hands into my pockets with cold,
calculated assurance.
“If they want a war with Vale Holdings,
we’ll give them an audit they’ll never forget.
”
Clara pulled the thumb drive from the terminal,
slid it securely into her pocket,
and looked up at me with a fearless,
radiant grin.
“When do we strike back,
Mr.
Vale?”
“Tonight,
” I replied.
“Pack your laptop,
Clara.
”

“We’re taking a trip to Zurich.
