Chapter 20 - The Midnight Siege

The darkness enveloped the penthouse instantly, swallowing the panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline.

The emergency backup generators did not kick on.

The high-voltage security grid went completely silent.

Down in the street fifty stories below, the distant wail of sirens echoed into the night.

Vance immediately drew his weapon, stepping in front of me with tactical precision.

“They cut the main fiber-optic feeds to the entire city block!” Vance shouted over the rising wind howling against the balcony glass.

“The building’s internal security network has been wiped!”

From the shadows, Thomas Sterling remained utterly calm, his ebony cane tapping rhythmically against the hardwood floor.

“He has arrived,” Thomas murmured.

Suddenly, the reinforced shatterproof glass of the panoramic terrace shattered with an explosive, concussive roar.

Three flashbang grenades detonated in midair, blinding the room with searing white light and filling our ears with deafening high-pitch ringing.

Heavy combat boots landed hard on the terrace tiles.

Silhouetted against the moonlight were four operatives dressed in unmarked black tactical gear, laser sights dancing across the walls.

Vance fired two rounds into the doorway, forcing the first operative to dive behind a marble pillar for cover.

“Clara, get into the panic room behind the study!” Vance roared, grabbing my arm and pulling me back toward the interior hallway.

I held Victoria against my chest with everything I had, wrapping my body around her to protect her from flying glass.

The baby was crying, terrified by the sudden noise and darkness.

As we sprinted down the private corridor toward the reinforced titanium panic vault, a tall, imposing figure stepped out from the shadows of the master study.

He did not wear tactical gear.

He wore a pristine charcoal cashmere coat, his silver hair neatly parted, carrying a suppressed silver automatic pistol in his right hand.

His face was carved from the same aristocratic bone structure as Thomas Sterling, but his eyes were entirely devoid of human empathy.

Julian Blackwood.

“Good evening, Clara,” Julian spoke, his voice smooth, elegant, and chillingly polite.

“Drop the weapon, Vance, or I will put a round through the child’s crib.”

Vance froze, his gun aimed directly at Julian’s head, but his finger hesitated on the trigger as the red laser sight from a sniper across the street landed squarely on Victoria’s blanket.

Thomas Sterling stepped into the corridor, leaning on his cane, facing his brother-in-law after twelve years of silence.

“You haven’t changed, Julian,” Thomas said softly.

“Still hiding behind mercenaries and threatening infants.”

“You should have died in the Alps, Thomas,” Julian replied, not taking his cold gaze off me.

“Your family was weak.”

“Your daughter was a fool.”

“Your grandson was a dog.”

Julian stepped closer to me, the barrel of his silver weapon lowering until it was pointed directly at the pendant hanging around my neck.

The pendant containing the master biometric encryption keys to Apex Vanguard’s global reserves.

“Hand over the key, Clara,” Julian whispered, a sinister, victorious smile curling his lips.

“Hand it over, and I might let you and the child walk out into the night with your lives.”

I stood tall, feeling Victoria’s warm, rapid heartbeat against my ribs.

I looked Julian Blackwood dead in his cold, arrogant eyes.

I didn't tremble.

I didn't beg.

I slowly reached up toward the pendant around my neck.

My fingers closed around the cold silver chain.

And then, the sound of heavy military helicopter blades thundered directly above the roof of the penthouse, shaking the very foundations of the skyscraper.

A massive spotlight blazed from the sky through the shattered terrace glass, blinding Julian and his mercenaries in an unbearable sea of pure daylight.

Through the radio on Julian’s tactical vest, a panicked voice screamed in terror:

“Commander! Abort! Abort!”

“We are surrounded by twelve federal tactical gunships!”

“Someone leaked our flight logs two hours before we even landed!”

Julian’s victorious smile instantly vanished, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated shock.

He snapped his head toward me.

I looked at him through the blinding spotlight, my lips curling into a cold, lethal smile.

“You thought you were hunting me, Julian?” I whispered over the roar of the descending gunships.

“I’ve been tracking your private jet since you left Zurich.”

Just then, a single gunshot echoed through the shattered penthouse, shattering the glass beneath Julian's feet as the roof above us breached with descending federal strike teams.

In the blinding chaos of smoke, lasers, and screaming sirens, Julian lunged forward, reaching directly for Victoria—
