Chapter 15 - The Ambush on Court Street

The sun rose over the granite columns of the Manhattan Surrogate Court on Foley Square, piercing through the lingering autumn fog.

Dozens of camera crews from Bloomberg, CNBC, and every major news network were already lined up behind the brass stanchions.

At eight-fifteen, three black armored Suburbans pulled up to the curb.

Eleanor Croft stepped out, looking triumphant, accompanied by a team of six senior corporate litigators in thousand-dollar suits.

She carried herself like a queen about to claim her long-lost province.

As she reached the top of the marble steps, the reporters lunged forward with microphones outstretched.

“Mrs. Croft, are you here to take over the guardianship of the Sterling estate?”

“Is it true that Croft Global is asserting ownership over Apex Vanguard’s maritime operations?”

Eleanor offered a cold, dignified smile to the lenses.

“I am simply here as a loving great-grandmother, fulfilling my family duty to rescue an innocent child from an unfit, unstable mother who destroyed my grandson’s life,” Eleanor spoke smoothly into the cameras.

“The Croft family has protected New York’s shipping trade for a century.”

“We will not allow our heritage to be dragged through the mud by an opportunist.”

Just as she finished her sentence, a solitary midnight-blue Rolls-Royce Phantom glided to a stop at the foot of the stairs.

The chauffer opened the door.

I stepped out.

I wore an impeccably tailored charcoal coat, my hair pinned back, my eyes carrying the absolute calm of an apex predator.

Behind me walked Vance, accompanied by four senior federal investigators from the Department of Justice wearing dark suits with gold lapel pins.

The courtyard fell dead silent.

Eleanor’s smile vanished, replaced by an irritated sneer.

“You brought lawyers to the steps, Clara?” Eleanor called out mockingly from above.

“You should have brought the baby’s crib.”

“The judge is waiting inside.”

“The judge isn’t waiting for a custody hearing, Eleanor,” I spoke, my voice amplified clearly across the silent crowd.

I walked up the granite stairs one slow, deliberate step at a time.

With every step I took, Eleanor’s litigators exchanged uneasy, nervous glances.

“What is the meaning of this theater?” Eleanor snapped.

“Last night, federal agents executed a search warrant on the private residence of Deputy Registrar Thomas Miller in Dover, Delaware,” I announced calmly.

Eleanor’s eyes contracted into sharp pinpricks of shock.

“Mr. Miller has already entered into a full confession agreement with the Southern District,” Vance continued, stepping forward and opening a manila folder before the cameras.

“He admitted under oath that on May fourteenth, he received three hundred thousand dollars in cryptocurrency from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered to Croft Maritime Holdings.”

“His task was to electronically alter the 1945 Joint Maritime Charter to fabricate a fraudulent custody claim over my daughter, Victoria.”

The crowd of reporters gasped, shutters clicking frantically like a swarm of locusts.

“That is an outrageous lie!” Eleanor shrieked, losing her aristocratic composure for the first time.

“My lawyers will sue you into bankruptcy for defamation!”

“Your lawyers won’t have the time, Mrs. Croft,” an investigator behind me announced, stepping past me to flash his federal gold badge.

May you like

“Eleanor Croft, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, tampering with public records, and grand conspiracy to commit maritime fraud.”

“You have the right to remain silent.”
