Chapter 16 - The Collapse of the Iron Matriarch

The sight of handcuffs clicking around Eleanor Croft’s pristine diamond bracelets was broadcast live on every financial news network in the Western Hemisphere.
Her six expensive lawyers immediately backed away, raising their hands and muttering that they had only been retained for civil custody matters.
They abandoned their billionaire client on the marble steps like rats fleeing a torpedoed cruiser.
“You dare put hands on me?” Eleanor screamed, thrashing against the two federal agents.
“Do you know who I am?”
“I built this city’s docks!”
“I dinner with governors!”
“Not anymore, Eleanor,” I said, standing only two feet away from her trembling, crimson-faced fury.
“At seven o'clock this morning, the Department of the Treasury froze every single operating account associated with Croft Global.”
“Your five primary cargo vessels in the Port of Newark have already been seized under maritime admiralty liens.”
“And the thirty percent stake your family held in transatlantic shipping?”
I leaned down, whispering softly into her ear so only she could hear.
“Apex Vanguard purchased your defaulted short positions twenty minutes ago when the markets opened in London.”
“I now own Croft Global Shipping, Eleanor.”
“You didn’t come to take my daughter.”
“You came to deliver your entire empire into my hands.”
Eleanor stared at me, her eyes bloodshot, her breath ragged and shallow.
The terrifying reality finally shattered her cold, arrogant mind.
She had spent eighty years crushing competitors, blackmailing relatives, and treating people like pawns on a chessboard.
She thought I was just a defenseless girl who had been broken by an abusive marriage.
She never realized that she was picking a fight with an empire far older, far wealthier, and infinitely more ruthless than her own.
“You... you witch...” she gasped, her voice breaking into a pathetic whimper.
“Take her away,” the federal lead agent commanded.
As they dragged the weeping matriarch down the steps toward the waiting federal cruiser, the media swarmed around me.
Microphones were thrust into my face from every angle.
“Ms. Sterling! Will you liquidate Croft Global?”
“Ms. Sterling, what will happen to the rest of the Croft family assets?”
I looked calmly into the primary camera lens, speaking with absolute authority.
“Croft Global will be completely dissolved.”
“Its assets will be integrated into the Sterling Maritime Foundation, with all surplus profits redirected toward establishing protective shelters and legal defense funds for victims of domestic abuse and corporate coercion.”
“The era of the Croft family using human lives as disposable collateral ends today.”
Without answering another question, I turned and walked back down the stairs to my waiting car.
Inside, Vance handed me a secure phone.
“Ma'am, there is one more matter that requires your attention,” Vance said quietly.
“The Warden at Otisville just called.”
“Brendan heard about his grandmother’s arrest on the prison recreation television ten minutes ago.”
“He suffered a complete psychological breakdown in the mess hall and is currently under twenty-four-hour suicide watch in the psychiatric wing.”
I stared out the window, watching the rain finally clear over Foley Square.
“Tell the warden to provide him with standard medical protocol,” I replied evenly.
“Nothing more.”
“Nothing less.”

“He wanted to live in a world governed by cruel power.”
“Now he will live in the world governed by cold justice.”
