Chapter 2 - The Thunder at the Gates

The silence that followed my quiet whisper into the phone was broken only by Brendan’s dismissive snort.
“Who are you whispering to, Cassidy?” Brendan mocked, cutting into his dry-aged ribeye with a silver knife.
“Are you calling the city welfare hotline to report a cold breeze?”
Jessica giggled loudly, leaning her bare shoulder against Brendan’s tailored sleeve.
“Maybe she’s calling her landlord to tell him she can’t pay rent for her miserable basement apartment this month.”
Diane waved a dismissive hand toward the two estate footmen stationed near the double oak doors.
“Arthur, Thomas, drag her out through the kitchen servant exit.”
“I don't want dirty puddles tracked across the Italian marble in the entrance gallery.”
The two footmen hesitated, their eyes darting nervously toward my visibly pregnant stomach.
Before either man could take a single step forward, a deafening blast echoed from the front courtyard.
The sound was followed immediately by the harsh squeal of high-performance tires tearing through wet gravel.
Brendan frowned, his fork pausing halfway to his mouth.
“What the hell is that?” he muttered, casting an annoyed glance toward the floor-to-ceiling bay windows.
Outside, the night sky was suddenly illuminated by piercing white floodlights.
Engines with terrifying horsepower hummed in unison, shaking the delicate crystal pendants of the Prague chandelier above us.
Diane stood up sharply, her wine glass wobbling on the table.
“Arthur, who on earth is making such a vulgar racket outside my private gate?”
The grand double doors of the dining hall were not opened politely; they were shoved inward with thunderous authority.
A squad of six men dressed in immaculate charcoal tactical suits stepped into the dining room.
Leading them was Arthur Vance, the sixty-year-old former head of private intelligence and Chief Legal Counsel for Apex Vanguard Holdings.
Vance’s face was carved from granite, his steel-gray eyes sweeping across the lavish room with cold disdain.
Behind him walked two female paramedics carrying heated medical blankets and an emergency trauma kit.
Diane gasped, clutching her pearl necklace as if someone had violated her personal sanctuary.
“What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Diane shrieked, her voice cracking with fury.
“Do you know where you are?”
“This is the private estate of the Morrison family!”
“I will have the Police Commissioner remove every single one of you in handcuffs!”
Director Vance did not even spare Diane a sideways glance.
He marched directly past Brendan, his polished leather shoes leaving sharp clicks on the soaked floorboards.
He stopped right beside my chair, dropped to one knee, and bowed his head with absolute reverence.
“Chairwoman Vance-Sterling,” he said in a voice that rang clearly through the stunned dining hall.
“Protocol Seven has been fully initiated across all twelve global subsidiaries.”
“The medical response team is here to assess you and the heir immediately.”
The silence that dropped over the room was absolute.
Brendan’s fork slipped from his hand and clattered loudly against his porcelain plate.
Jessica’s jaw went slack, her champagne flute tilting dangerously in her frozen fingers.
One of the female paramedics immediately wrapped a thick, self-warming thermal fleece around my shivering shoulders.
Another medic gently placed a fetal doppler monitor against my drenched abdomen.
The steady, rhythmic galloping sound of my baby’s heartbeat filled the silent room through the portable speaker.
A wave of sheer relief washed over my chest, hot tears pricking behind my eyelids.
My daughter was safe.
“Chairwoman?” Brendan stammered, slowly rising from his chair with an incredulous, mocking laugh that sounded painfully hollow.
“Vance, have you lost your mind?”
“Cassidy is an unemployed nobody who lives off my family’s goodwill!”
Director Vance stood up slowly, turning around to face Brendan with eyes that held the chill of an arctic winter.
“Mr. Brendan Morrison,” Vance said with icy precision.

“You have spent the last seven years living in an empire you did not build, driving vehicles you do not own, and residing in an estate that does not belong to you.”
“And twenty seconds ago, your temporary authorization to exist inside this property was permanently revoked.”
