Chapter 19 - The Viper’s True Architect

The silence that followed Thomas Sterling’s declaration was so absolute that the hum of the penthouse climate control sounded deafening.
“Who?” I asked, gripping Victoria tighter against my chest.
“Eleanor is in federal custody.”
“Brendan is locked in a psychiatric ward.”
“His mother is behind bars.”
“Who else could possibly have an interest in destroying me?”
Thomas walked toward the panoramic glass window, looking down at the glittering sprawl of Manhattan.
“Twelve years ago, my plane didn’t crash due to mechanical failure or bad weather,” Thomas revealed, his voice hard as iron.
“A bomb was placed in the right turbine.”
“It wasn’t planted by Eleanor Croft.”
“Eleanor was too arrogant and impatient to plan an assassination of that scale.”
“The bomb was commissioned by a man named Julian Blackwood.”
Vance’s face went completely pale.
“The Blackwood Sovereign Fund?” Vance whispered.
“The private Swiss entity that controls forty percent of European rare earth refineries?”
“The very same,” Thomas nodded grimly.
“Julian Blackwood was my late wife’s illegitimate brother.”
“He spent forty years harboring an obsessive, burning hatred for the Sterling name.”
“When I vanished, he didn’t just want our money.”
“He wanted to systematically humiliate, corrupt, and dismantle every branch of our bloodline.”
Thomas turned back to look at me, his slate-gray eyes filled with dark admiration.
“He manipulated Brendan’s mother into financial desperation.”
“He planted the idea in Eleanor’s ear to harvest your father’s maritime charter.”
“He fed Brendan the drugs and gambling addictions that turned him into the cowardly monster who humiliated you at that dinner table.”
“Julian Blackwood orchestrated every single tear you shed, Clara.”
“His goal was to force you into a state of total despair, wait until the baby was born, and then acquire Apex Vanguard through a hostile leveraged buyout orchestrated by foreign sovereign proxies.”
A cold, burning rage ignited within the deepest core of my soul.
All this time, I thought I had been fighting the shallow vanity of a spoiled, narcissistic family.
I thought Brendan’s cruelty was born out of petty entitlement.
I never imagined that my suffering, my tears, and the freezing water that had drenched my pregnant body were part of a decades-long psychological execution plotted by a shadow billionaire across the Atlantic.
“Where is he now?” I asked, my voice dropping into an icy, venomous whisper.
“His private Gulfstream touched down at Teterboro Airport forty minutes ago,” Thomas answered, looking at his antique pocket watch.
“He knows Eleanor Croft has fallen.”
“He knows his pawns have been wiped off the board.”
“And he knows that I am alive.”
“He didn’t come to negotiate, Clara.”
“He came to finish what he started twelve years ago.”
“Then let him try,” I replied, stepping forward, my heart beating with fearless resolve.
“I took Brendan’s house.”
“I took Eleanor’s shipping fleet.”
“If Julian Blackwood wants to step onto my battlefield, I will take his entire sovereign empire and burn it to the ground.”
Thomas looked at me, a proud, fierce grin spreading across his aged face.
“I expected nothing less from my great-granddaughter’s mother,” Thomas said.

Just as the words left his lips, the lights across the entire penthouse flickered violently.
Then, with a deafening electronic snap, every single light in the building went completely black.
