Chapter 80 - The Edge of the Abyss

A twin bank of ultra-high-intensity searchlights cut through the swirling snow, instantly blinding David and Leah.

The sound came a second later—not the mechanical groan of the elevator, but the deep, rhythmic, chest-thumping thunder of twin turboshaft rotors beating the thin mountain air into submission.

A massive, matte-black military transport helicopter hovered just off the edge of the cliff, its nose tilted down, the downdraft of its rotors kicking up a blinding vortex of powdered snow that tore at their clothes.

David immediately shoved Leah and the children behind a concrete winch housing, drawing his knife—the only weapon he had left. His heart sank into an icy void. *They were waiting for us. The Syndicate had a perimeter team.*

The side door of the helicopter slid open with a heavy mechanical thump.

Four figures in unmarked, heavy arctic combat gear jumped onto the pad, their assault rifles raised, forming a lethal perimeter around the concrete platform. But they didn't fire. They didn't advance.

Instead, a fifth figure stepped to the edge of the helicopter skid.

She did not wear tactical gear. She wore a heavy wool trench coat against the blizzard, her graying hair whipped wildly by the rotor wash. In her hands, she held a satellite terminal displaying a live biometric readout—a readout tracking two green pulses.

Maya. And the baby.

The woman raised an electronic megaphone, her voice cutting through the scream of the blizzard and the deafening roar of the helicopter engines with terrifying, crystal clarity.

"Lower your weapon, David!" the woman called out.

David squinted through the blinding snow, his knuckles white around the hilt of the knife. "Stay back! I'll throw us off this cliff before I let you take them!"

The woman lowered the megaphone slightly and stepped down onto the snowy concrete pad. She walked forward until she was ten paces away, raising both hands to show they were empty.

"I’m not here to take them, David," she shouted over the storm. "Julian was a rogue asset. Your mother was a rogue asset. The Syndicate didn't send us to harvest you."

She paused, pulling a laminated identification badge from beneath her coat and holding it toward the light. Emblazoned upon it was not the crimson seal of the Cardinal Syndicate, but the gold-and-black crest of the United States Department of Defense Special Operations Command.

"Then who the hell are you?" David yelled back, his voice cracking against the gale.

The woman looked directly into his eyes, her expression unreadable, solemn, and chillingly certain.

"My name is Director Catherine Hayes," she said. "Thirty-two years ago, I authorized the Genesis Initiative for the Pentagon. Your mother didn't create you to save a syndicate, David. She stole you from us."

She pointed to the helicopter cabin, where two armed operators stood beside open medical transport pods.

"Get aboard, Subject Zero-One," Hayes said, her voice dropping into a register that froze the blood in David’s veins. "Your real creators have been looking for you for a very long time."
