Chapter 49 - The Crimson Lockdown

Time seemed to dilate into microscopic fractions of a second.
David did not think. The synthetic reflexes woven into his DNA took command before his conscious mind could even process the threat.
He dropped his shoulder, drove his legs into the slick, amniotic-soaked marble, and launched his body across the open floor between Julian's gun and Leah.
A gunshot cracked.
Pain, white-hot and searing, ripped through David’s left shoulder as Julian’s bullet tore through his flesh. The impact knocked him off course, but the momentum of his dive carried him straight into Julian’s knees.
Both men crashed violently against the base of the surgical pod. Julian’s pistol clattered across the floor, sliding under the glass pedestal.
Above them, on the balcony, Evelyn fired her final round, shattering the console’s primary power regulator. "David! Break the pod! Cut the feed!"
A shower of electrical fire erupted from the central terminal. The glowing displays over Maya's cradle began to flicker violently, shifting from emerald to a chaotic strobing crimson.

"No!" Julian roared, clawing at David's face with manicured hands, his fingernails digging into David’s open wound. "Thirty years! You will not destroy it!"
David ignored the agony in his shoulder. He seized Julian by the lapels of his immaculate suit, slammed him back against the marble pedestal, and drove his right fist into the old man’s jaw with all the fury of a betrayed son.
Julian's head snapped back. He went limp, his silver hair splattered with red, slumping unconscious onto the fluid-soaked tiles.
"Leah! The emergency release!" David yelled, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he scrambled to his feet. "There's a manual lever under the bassinet—pull it!"
Leah, still clutching Asset 409 against her chest with one arm, reached under the glowing pod with her free hand. Her fingers found a heavy red mechanical latch. She pulled it downward with all her strength.
With a concussive hiss of releasing pressure, the acrylic dome popped upward. The robotic leads detached instantly from Maya's skin, snapping back into their overhead housings.
Maya drew in a sharp, sudden breath—and then, for the first time in hours, a loud, piercing, furious wail echoed from her tiny lungs.
"She’s alive!" Leah sobbed, scooping Maya into her coat, holding both identical babies against her chest. "David, she's crying!"
"We have to go!" Evelyn’s voice came from the spiral staircase at the side of the rotunda. She was limping down the steps, her coat stained with soot and grease, holding a fresh assault rifle scavenged from the balcony guards. "Blackwood's second wave is bringing heavy demolition charges! The whole mansion is going to collapse in three minutes!"
David turned to face his mother. The woman who had terrorized his home, who had tried to kill his child, who had shattered his reality.
Evelyn reached the bottom of the stairs, stopping five paces away. Her hands trembled on the rifle, her chest heaving, tears streaming through the grime on her aged cheeks.
"I didn't try to kill Maya in your house, David," Evelyn choked out, her voice breaking with thirty years of repressed agony. "I was trying to deactivate the subcutaneous tracking beacon they implanted in her base of skull at the hospital. I was trying to save you before the signal reached Julian."
David stared at her, the pieces of the nightmare finally locking into place with devastating, undeniable clarity.

Before he could speak, a massive explosion tore through the rear blast doors of the rotunda.
