Chapter 50 - The Cradle Unbound

The shockwave threw David, Leah, and Evelyn to the floor. Chunks of masonry and shattered glass rained down from the ceiling as smoke billowed through the breach.
Through the blazing doorway strode six heavily armored operatives, their weapons equipped with high-intensity tactical lights that cut through the gloom like broadswords.
Behind them walked a woman in a dark grey military coat, her hair pulled back into a severe bun, her face cold, emotionless, and terrifyingly familiar.
She looked exactly like Evelyn. But she was forty years younger.
"Hello, Sister," the young woman said, her voice smooth and chillingly melodic over the howling sirens. "Did you really think you were the only Evelyn Vance we kept in reserve?"
Evelyn scrambled to her feet, shielding David and Leah with her body, raising her empty revolver in defiance. "Cassandra... you died in the lab fire."
"The original died," the clone replied calmly, raising a suppressed pistol with lethal elegance. "I am the successor. And the Board has decided that Project Phoenix has outlived its usefulness."
Cassandra’s gaze drifted from Evelyn to David, then down to the two screaming infants in Leah’s arms.
"Subject Alpha. Asset 409. And the uncorrupted prototype," Cassandra said softly. "The Board requires the infants for biological liquidation. You and your wife, David, are deemed surplus to requirements."
"David, run!" Evelyn screamed, charging forward with her bare hands toward Cassandra’s security team.
*Crack. Crack.*
Two suppressed rounds punched through Evelyn's chest. She gasped, her eyes widening, and collapsed backward onto the blood-slick marble floor, her hand reaching out toward David one last time before going completely still.
"Mom!" David roared, his voice tearing from his throat.
"Kill the man. Secure the children," Cassandra ordered without blinking.
The lead operative stepped forward, raising his carbine directly at David’s forehead.
At that exact second, from beneath the central surgical pedestal, Julian Sterling’s bloody hand suddenly shot out, grabbing a remote detonation switch mounted to the undercarriage of the life-support system.
"If I cannot have them..." Julian whispered, blood bubbling between his teeth, "...no one will."
Julian slammed his thumb onto the red switch.
A deep, subterranean shudder ripped through the foundations of the mansion. Beneath the floor tiles, yellow gas began venting through hundreds of tiny floor grates, and a digital voice echoed through the crumbling rotunda:
*FAILSAFE CLEANSING PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. SUB-LEVEL SELF-DESTRUCT IN T-MINUS SIXTY SECONDS.*
The operative hesitated, his eyes darting toward the venting gas.
In that split second of distraction, David lunged forward, tackled Leah and the two babies toward the heavy metal hatch of the maintenance chute behind the pod, and kicked the release lever.

The hatch dropped open beneath them into pitch-black emptiness.
David, Leah, Maya, and Asset 409 fell through the darkness, the sounds of gunfire, screaming sirens, and tearing steel fading above them—just as a cataclysmic ball of fire consumed the rotunda above, sealing the shaft shut behind them in an avalanche of burning concrete.
