Chapter 31 - The Echo in the Smoke

The gunshot cracked through the pressurized white fog like thunder inside an iron drum.
David’s ears rang with a vicious, high-pitched whine. The halon gas tasted like cold copper and synthetic chalk, snatching the breath right out of his throat. He dropped to his knees, clutching the iron tire tool, the world around him reduced to blinding milky vapor and the pulsing crimson strobes of the ceiling alarms.
"Evelyn!" Julian’s voice shrieked through the mist, raw and stripped of all clinical composure. "Mother!"
A wet, sickening thud hit the linoleum floor three feet in front of David. Through the swirling fog, he saw Evelyn’s silhouette collapse sideways. Her hand clawed desperately at the control panel before slumping down, leaving a dark smear across the flickering LED monitors. The glass console sparked violently, spitting blue electrical embers into the gloom.
From the shattered security door behind the observation glass, heavy tactical boots crunched over broken polycarbonate. They moved without haste—measured, mechanical, lethal.
"Target neutralized," a gravelly voice spoke into a throat mic, cold as dry ice. "Secure the specimens. Cleanse the theater."
David’s instincts took over before his conscious mind could process the terror. He didn't care about the Consortium. He didn't care about his mother's twisted legacy or the blood money Julian had chased into damnation. He had two daughters in this room—one stolen from Leah’s womb thirteen months ago, and one born from a test tube who had just called him *Dada*.
Crawling on his elbows and knees, David sliced his palm on a jagged shard of glass, but the surge of adrenaline drowned out the pain. He lunged toward the transport bassinet. Asset 409 was crying now, terrified by the deafening siren, her tiny hands beating against the clear plastic enclosure.
"I've got you," David choked out, lifting the baby against his chest with his left arm. She buried her wet face into the crook of his neck, her heartbeat hammering against his collarbone like the frantic flutter of a trapped sparrow.
Across the room, the surgical examination table was engulfed in shadows. Leah was already there.
David saw his wife’s silhouette emerging from the fog like an avenging ghost. She didn't have a weapon, but her posture was feral. She had ripped the oxygen hood off the real Maya and scooped the frail, shivering infant into her arms, pressing the baby’s pale cheek against her own tear-streaked skin.
"David!" Leah screamed, her voice cracking through the wail of the sirens. "The emergency exit behind the scrub bay! Run!"

Before David could take a single step, the beam of an infrared weapon sight cut through the halon mist, painting a glowing red dot squarely over Asset 409’s forehead.
