Chapter 47 - The Fracture Within

Julian lunged toward the console, slamming his palm onto the biometric glass pad. "Override code: Phoenix-Zero-Nine! Clear lockdown on Surgical Pod One!"
The machine chimed. The amber warning screens shifted to emerald green, and the pediatric life support system roared back to life, flooding Maya’s enclosure with restorative gas and warming therapy. Her heart rate monitor steadied once more.
"The process requires five uninterrupted minutes to safely disengage the neural leads," Julian shouted over the deafening rattle of assault rifles echoing down the hallway. "If you rip her out now, her lungs will collapse instantly!"
"Then we buy five minutes," David said.
He shoved Asset 409 into Leah's arms. "Leah, take her. Get behind the control console. Keep your head down, no matter what happens."
Leah held the baby against her chest, her eyes wide with terror, but she nodded fiercely. "David, be careful. Please."
David dropped the tire iron and stripped the tactical vest and an assault rifle from the fallen guard on the floor. The weapon was cold and heavy in his hands, but the moment his fingers wrapped around the receiver, an eerie, instinctual muscle memory surged through his arms. He didn't just know how to hold it; he knew the balance, the weight, the trigger reset.
*Engineered for cognitive dominance. Engineered for survival.*
Julian noticed the seamless ease with which David handled the weapon. A chilling smile of pride crossed the old man's face. "The conditioning never truly fades, does it, Alpha?"
"Shut up and take cover," David growled, sliding behind a thick marble pillar near the rotunda's arched entrance.
The outer doors blew inward with a concussive blast.
Three Blackwood operatives poured through the smoke, their weapons up, sweeping the room. David didn't hesitate. He leaned out from the pillar, aligned the holographic sight, and fired three controlled bursts.
Two operatives went down instantly, their armor compromised at the neck and chest. The third dove behind a marble planter, returning fire that chewed chunks of stone from David's pillar, sending shards stinging across his cheek.
"Hostiles in the rotunda!" the surviving operative shouted into his comms. "Subject Alpha is armed and hostile! Engaging with lethal force!"
More boots thudded heavily down the marble hallway. Five more men entered the breach, spreading out in a flanking maneuver designed to trap David and Julian's remaining security in a crossfire.
Behind David, Julian’s remaining guards fired back, their weapons hammering out a deafening rhythm in the enclosed space. Stray bullets began striking the outer rows of glass incubation tanks.
With sickening crashes, the tanks ruptured one by one. Gallons of amber amniotic fluid cascaded across the floor, washing dormant, pale child clones onto the bloody marble tiles like discarded dolls.
Leah covered her mouth, stifling a scream of utter horror as the cold fluid washed around her boots.
"Three minutes remaining on the stabilization cycle!" Julian screamed from behind the pedestal, his silver cane discarded, clutching an automated pistol in his trembling hand.
"They're flanking the left corridor!" David shouted, reloading his magazine with mechanical speed. "If they get behind the pod, Leah and Maya are directly in the line of fire!"

Then, from the shadows of the upper observation balcony, a single gunshot cracked—not an assault rifle, but the deep, booming roar of a heavy-caliber revolver.
