Chapter 72 - The Architect of Ashes

"Don't move, Mason!" Daniel roared, snapping the carbine up and centering the holographic sight directly between Emily’s eyes.
Emily didn't even flinch. She stared down the barrel of the weapon without a single heartbeat’s hesitation. "You won't pull that trigger, Daniel. You spent five years worshipping my ghost. You built a shrine out of your grief."
"You aren't a ghost," Daniel snarled, his finger resting on the two-pound trigger pull, his muscles coiled like steel springs. "You're a parasite."
"I am his architect!" Emily’s voice suddenly rose, piercing through the gale of the Hebrides storm. She swept her hand toward Mason. "Do you think it was an accident that Vanessa placed that dog collar around his neck? Do you think it was just the petty cruelty of a bitter stepmother? Vanessa was following *my* protocols!"
The air in the room seemed to freeze. Daniel felt a cold knife twist into his gut. "What did you say?"
Arthur Vance leaned his head back against his leather pillow, his dying face illuminated by the green glow of the telemetry screens. "Tell him, my dear. Let him understand the perfection of the Vance Sovereign bloodline before his heart gives out."
"The neurological markers for the Sovereign project require severe early-childhood stressors," Emily explained, her tone descending into the dry, emotionless cadence of an academic lecture. "The brain’s hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis must be forged under absolute subjugation. The sensory deprivation, the obedience training, the pet collar... it was all calibrated to suppress his emotional limbic system while enhancing cognitive compliance. Vanessa was simply the blunt instrument executing my curriculum. She was supposed to break him completely before the extraction."
Daniel’s vision turned scarlet. Every bruise on Mason’s collarbone, every whimper in the dark, every nightmare the boy had suffered in the back of the station wagon as they fled across America—it wasn't just Vanessa’s sadistic malice. It was a calculated protocol designed by the woman who gave him birth.
"You monstrous bitch," Daniel whispered.
"I built him to survive Arthur's transfer!" Emily snapped, tapping the tablet. Behind her, a massive cylindrical chamber embedded in the back wall hissed, pressurized coolant venting into the room in a cloud of white frost. "Arthur’s stem cells are failing. His organs are necrotic. Mason carries the only pristine matching sequence on Earth because I edited his genome in vitro before he was implanted into my womb! He isn't your son, Daniel. He was Arthur's biological replacement from the moment of conception!"
"Daddy..." Mason whimpered, taking a terrified step backward toward the jagged glass framing the blown-out doors. The silver lighter clicked again. A small, blue flame flickered against the gale.
"Mason, look at me," Daniel commanded, keeping his rifle locked on Emily, but speaking with all the raw love left in his ruined soul. "Remember what we said in Blackwood Hollow? Remember what the Sovereign ring meant?"
Mason’s eyes darted to his father, tears cutting clean lines through the soot and rain on his cheeks. "The... the blood doesn't make the man," the boy recited, his voice shaking violently. "The shield does."
"That's right," Daniel said softly. "And she is not your mother. She's just a wall. And we break walls."

Emily’s face darkened, the porcelain mask finally cracking into a sneer of pure venom. "Security! Neutralize the father. Secure the specimen!"
