Chapter 45 - The Scalpel and the Stethoscope

"Dr. Howell said the boy’s beacon went dark right here," a voice barked outside the depot.

Daniel peered through a rusted seam in the iron siding. Three black SUVs sat idling twenty yards away. Stepping out of the lead vehicle was Dr. Kenneth Howell, the surgeon in the immaculate white coat who had stood beside Vanessa on the bridge. But he was no longer looking arrogant; his hands trembled as he clutched a rugged satellite terminal.

Behind him stepped two heavily armed mercenaries, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the tree line.

"Find that transponder!" Howell yelled into a radio, his voice strained by panic. "If Victor's trust doesn't receive the boy's live biometric handshake by midnight, the offshore accounts lock down completely! We won't get a single dime, and Vanessa will skin us alive!"

Daniel listened from the darkness, his mind calculating with lethal clarity. *The biometric handshake.*

Mason’s presence wasn't just Vanessa’s twisted revenge. It was financial survival. Victor Sterling’s multi-billion-dollar Sovereign trust was coded to the biological markers of Emily’s heir—Mason. Vanessa needed Mason alive and submissive to unlock the offshore assets before the federal grand jury seized the Vance estate.

"They don't want you dead, Mason," Daniel whispered against his son’s ear. "They need you. That makes you powerful. Do you understand?"

Mason sniffled, his eyes clearing as the shock began to recede, replaced by a quiet, steely resolve. "They need me to open their box."

"That’s right. And we’re going to burn their box down."

Daniel moved like a wraith through the shadows of the depot. He found a half-empty drum of industrial kerosene near the maintenance bay and knocked it over, letting the volatile fluid pool beneath the loading dock. He removed an emergency flare from his combat vest.

Outside, Howell was marching toward the entrance, flanked by the two guards. "Check the depot! If he’s in there, shoot the father in the spine! Do not damage the boy's retinas or fingers!"

The guards kicked the heavy sliding door open.

Daniel struck the flare.

The red phosphorus ignited the kerosene fumes in a catastrophic fireball. A wall of blinding orange flame roared outward through the entrance, engulfing the two mercenaries instantly in a vortex of heat and screams. Howell was thrown backward onto the gravel, his coat catching fire as he shrieked in agony.

Daniel stepped through the smoke like an avenging demon. Before Howell could extinguish the flames on his sleeve, Daniel’s boot slammed into his chest, pinning the corrupt surgeon to the frozen earth.
