Chapter 60 - The Serpent's Final Coil

Julian lay pinned in the red-stained snow, gasping for breath, the fire from the wreckage casting dancing, demonic shadows across his blood-streaked face. Even broken, defeated, and facing the barrel of a gun, a sick, venomous smirk spread across his lips.
"You... you fool," Julian coughed, a bubble of crimson bursting on his lip. "You think... you think you won? You think you can just shoot me and walk away into the sunset with your little boy?"
"The code, Julian. Five seconds," Daniel cocked the hammer of the SIG Sauer. The metallic *click* was absolute.
"0-9-2-4-Emily," Julian wheezed, his eyes watering from the excruciating pain in his leg. "Enter it on the transponder pad... on my belt... it deactivates the capsule's dissolver."
Markus jogged over, snatched the digital transponder unit from Julian's waist, and swiftly input the sequence.
In the back of the Audi, Mason gasped as the blue light beneath his neck turned a solid, steady green, then extinguished completely. The failsafe was deactivated. The boy was safe.
"It’s off, Daniel!" Markus called out, exhaling a breath of cold white vapor. "The boy is clean!"
Julian chuckled, a wet, rattling sound in his chest. "Go ahead, Daniel. Pull the trigger. End it. But know this... I am merely the third chair of the Sovereign council. Emily was the first. Her father... Mason’s grandfather... is waiting in London. And Vanessa? You think Vanessa’s mother was working for me?"
Daniel’s brow furrowed, his finger freezing on the trigger.
"Vanessa wasn't my collection agent," Julian whispered, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "She was *his*. The Vance family... Daniel, your own father didn't die in an accident thirty years ago. He faked his death to build the syndicate’s North American treasury. Vanessa was your half-sister's daughter. You married into the bloodline you thought you escaped."
Daniel’s world violently tilted on its axis. The air left his lungs as if he had been struck with a sledgehammer. The dog collar. The abuse. The psychological torture of Mason. It wasn't an outside invasion. It was an ancestral culling.
Suddenly, a high-pitched electronic tone chimed from the satellite console inside the burning helicopter cockpit.
The surviving heads-up display flickered to life. A voice spoke through the wreckage, deep, ancient, and chillingly familiar—a voice Daniel had heard in old family home movies from his childhood:
*"Daniel. You have proven yourself worthy of the Vance name. You dismantled Julian's weakness with exceptional brutality. Bring my grandson to Heathrow. If you refuse, the tracking device inside your own spine—the one your military doctors implanted ten years ago—will detonate the micro-charge in your heart. You have twenty-four hours to come home, son."*
Daniel stood frozen in the falling snow, his gun still aimed at Julian's head, the horror settling deep into his bones as the monitor screen displayed a real-time biometric scan—not of Mason, but of Daniel's own chest, where a tiny, blinking red dot pulsed beneath his fourth rib.
Behind him, Mason stepped out of the Audi into the snow, holding Emily's silver lighter in his tiny hand, looking at his father with eyes full of love and terrifying, unyielding courage.

"Daddy?" Mason asked softly. "Who is on the radio?"
Daniel lowered his weapon, looking across the burning wreckage into the black mountain fog, knowing that the nightmare had not ended. The monster he had been hunting his entire life... was his own father.
