Chapter 53 - The Shadows of Lake Geneva

The icy waters of Lake Geneva hit Daniel’s face like a thousand microscopic needles. He surfaced silently twenty yards from the jagged stone retaining wall that formed the southern border of the Sterling estate—Château de la Fougère.
The compound rose out of the mist like a gothic leviathan, a centuries-old fortress of dark stone, vaulted archways, and modern, high-intensity security floodlights sweeping across the pristine manicured lawns. Infrared motion sensors were mounted at thirty-meter intervals along the parapets. This wasn't just an estate; it was an impenetrable private fortress designed to withstand a military siege.
Daniel pulled himself out of the black water, discarding his scuba rebreather beneath a sunken wooden dock. Water dripped from his black tactical gear as he crouched against the cold limestone. He pulled a palm-sized digital frequency jammer from his waterproof pouch, activating the loop algorithm Markus had provided. For exactly ninety seconds, the high-definition security feeds along the southern wall would replay an empty, rain-swept lawn.
He scaled the stone balustrade with practiced agility, his boots landing soundlessly on the wet grass.
Through the estate’s towering glass conservatory, Daniel could see the warm glow of crystal chandeliers. An opulent gathering was underway. Dozens of men in bespoke tuxedos and women draped in diamonds stood with crystal champagne flutes in their hands, their soft laughter muffled by the double-paned reinforced glass. High society, impeccably dressed, masking the monstrous reality that their empire was built on human misery and stolen children.
Daniel slipped through the shadows of the marble colonnade, his suppressed pistol raised in the low-ready position.
Ahead of him, two guards in dark, tailored suits wearing earpieces turned the corner of the garden path, their submachine guns concealed beneath open overcoats.
"The transport from the tarmac was delayed," one guard muttered in French, checking his watch. "The boy didn't take the neuro-sedative well. Dr. Weiss had to double the dose."
"Lord Julian is furious," the other replied. "The boy needs to be presented to the inner circle tonight. If he’s unconscious, the council won't ratify the succession transfer."
Daniel emerged from the mist like a wraith.
Before the first guard could register the shadow, Daniel’s gloved left hand clamped over his mouth while the heel of his boot drove into the back of his knee. The guard collapsed, and Daniel drove a heavy, precise blow to the nerve cluster at the base of his skull. The second guard whipped around, reaching for his weapon, but Daniel slammed him violently against the stone pillar, the muzzle of his suppressed SIG Sauer pressed firmly beneath the man's jaw.
"Where is the boy?" Daniel whispered, his breath a razor-sharp fog.
The guard’s eyes bulged in sheer terror. He could smell the lake water, the gunpowder, and the unmistakable scent of a father who had left his mercy behind at the ruins of his home.
"The... the lower clinic," the guard stammered in broken English, his body trembling against the cold stone. "Beneath the ballroom. The biometric elevator in the library."
"How many guards?"
"Six... six contractors in the anteroom. Dr. Weiss is preparing him."
"Thank you," Daniel said quietly, and drove the butt of his weapon into the guard’s temple, knocking him instantly into oblivion.

Daniel dragged both bodies into the thick rhododendron bushes, stepped over the low terrace wall, and approached the library’s service entrance. The rescue was no longer an investigation or a battle. It was an extraction from hell itself.
