Chapter 48 - The Mother’s Last Voice

Daniel descended the spiral stone staircase into the sub-basement of Ravenswood. The air grew frigid, smelling of ozone, computer coolant, and decaying flowers.
The vault was a sterile, circular chamber enclosed in reinforced ballistic glass. Banks of computer servers hummed along the perimeter, processing terabytes of encrypted banking data. In the center of the room sat Vanessa, upright in an electric wheelchair, her lap cleared, her stitched face illuminated by a giant terminal display showing the countdown to midnight: *00:03:12*.
And on the table beside her sat an old reel-to-reel audio recorder, hooked into the mainframe.
"You're too late, Daniel," Vanessa croaked, raising a small detonator in her right hand. Her eyes were sunken, swimming with terminal madness. "Victor didn't just build this trust for Mason. He built it to destroy you."
She hit a key on the terminal.
The reel-to-reel spun to life. A voice filled the underground vault—a voice that made Daniel’s entire world stop spinning.
It was Emily. His late wife. Mason’s real mother.
"If you are hearing this, Daniel... it means Vanessa finally found a way to reach the trust," Emily’s voice trembled from the speakers, recorded months before her tragic, suspicious car crash. "She isn't my half-sister by chance. She was Victor’s illegitimate daughter. She spent her whole life watching me have the family she was denied. She hated Mason from the moment he drew breath. Daniel... the trust isn't money. It’s an indictment. Every politician, every judge, every corrupt penny the Vances stole is mapped in this cipher. If you destroy the biometric key, you destroy them all. Save our boy, Daniel. Let the empire burn."
Daniel stared at the tape, his heart tearing in two. The entire nightmare—the collar, the false marriage, the isolation, the abuse—had not been random cruelty. It was Vanessa’s lifelong, sickening obsession with erasing Emily’s existence and stealing the child that represented everything she could never be.
"She thought she was so pure," Vanessa snarled, tears of black mascara and blood seeping from her stitched eyelids. "She thought she was the favorite child! But I took her life, Daniel! I cut the brake lines on her sedan! And I put that collar on her precious boy to make him beg like a dog in the dirt!"
Daniel’s vision narrowed to a single, crimson point. "You killed Emily."
May you like
"And now," Vanessa shrieked, slamming her palm onto the console, "I kill everything she loved!"
