Chapter 9

The transition from housemaid to primary caregiver happened with the ruthless, terrifying efficiency that characterized Alexander Hayes' entire empire. By noon the following day, Anna’s meager belongings had been moved from the cramped staff quarters in the basement to a sprawling, luxurious suite adjoining Emily’s nursery on the second floor. The wardrobe was quickly filled with elegant, practical clothing purchased by the estate manager, entirely replacing the stiff black and white maid uniforms.

Anna spent her first official day in her new role sitting on the floor of the massive playroom, wearing comfortable slacks and a soft cashmere sweater. Her injured foot was propped up on a plush pillow.

Emily sat happily beside her, building a chaotic tower out of colorful wooden blocks. The little girl seemed remarkably resilient, the terror of the previous night fading under the warmth of Anna's undivided attention.

"Look, Anna!" Emily cheered, placing a blue block precariously on top of the leaning tower. "It's a castle!"

"It's beautiful, sweetie," Anna smiled genuinely, clapping her hands. "But I think it needs a flag on top."

The heavy oak door of the playroom opened silently.

Alexander stepped into the room. He had just returned from the city, dressed in a sharp, tailored gray suit, his overcoat draped over one broad shoulder. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes hinting at a long night spent dealing with the violent fallout of Meredith’s exile and the resulting shifts in syndicate power.

But as he looked at the scene on the floor—his daughter laughing happily, safe and protected by the beautiful woman sitting beside her—the harsh, angular lines of his face visibly softened.

"Daddy!" Emily shrieked, instantly abandoning the block tower. She scrambled across the thick carpet and threw her arms around his legs.

Alexander dropped his overcoat and scooped her up effortlessly, pressing a kiss to her rosy cheek. "Hello, little bird. Have you been good for Anna today?"

"Yes! We built a castle!" Emily announced proudly, pointing to the scattered blocks. "And Anna read me three stories!"

Anna attempted to stand up from the floor, leaning heavily on her good foot to greet her employer formally.

"Stay seated, Anna," Alexander commanded gently, walking over and sitting down on the edge of a nearby armchair, balancing Emily on his knee. He looked at her bandaged foot. "How is the pain today?"

"It's manageable, sir," Anna replied softly, pulling her leg back slightly under his intense scrutiny. "Dr. Evans left some medication, but I haven't needed it. Thank you for asking."

"You don't need to call me 'sir' when it's just the three of us," Alexander said quietly. His penetrating eyes held hers for a long moment. "Alexander will do."

Anna flushed slightly, the intimacy of the request catching her off guard. In the rigid hierarchy of the mansion, calling the boss by his first name was a privilege reserved only for the highest-ranking capos. "Okay... Alexander."

He smiled faintly, a subtle curve of his lips that entirely transformed his dangerous face. He turned his attention back to his daughter.

"Emily, Marcus is bringing the horses out to the paddock," Alexander told the little girl. "Would you like to go watch them run?"

"Yes, please!" Emily squealed, practically vibrating with excitement.

"Go get your coat," Alexander instructed. He set her down, and the three-year-old immediately bolted out the door and down the hallway toward her bedroom.

Alexander remained seated in the armchair, the silence of the playroom heavy but comfortable. He looked at Anna, his gaze drifting from her heart-shaped face down to the casual, elegant sweater she was wearing.

"You look different without the uniform," Alexander noted, his voice a low rumble.

"I feel different," Anna admitted honestly, rubbing her arms. "It’s a lot to process. Moving up here... the new clothes. I feel like I'm trespassing."

"You belong exactly where I put you," Alexander stated with absolute, unyielding certainty. He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees, his tattooed hands clasped together. "The staff respects power, Anna. They saw what you did last night. They know you hold my favor. No one will question your place here."

"And Meredith?" Anna asked hesitantly, the name feeling like a curse in the quiet room. "Will she cause trouble?"

May you like

Alexander’s expression instantly turned to cold, unforgiving stone. The loving father vanished, replaced by the lethal architect of the underworld.

"Meredith is no longer a concern," Alexander replied smoothly. His tone carried a devastating finality that made Anna shiver. "She has been permanently removed from the board."
