Chapter 19

The months that followed were a period of unparalleled prosperity and peace for the Hayes syndicate. Alexander’s brutal, absolute suppression of the Chicago threat had sent a chilling message across the global underworld. No rival family dared to breathe his name with disrespect.

Anna thrived in her new role. She was not just a guardian; she became a trusted confidante. Her sharp intellect and intuitive understanding of human nature provided Alexander with a perspective he had lacked in his ruthless, violent world.

They stood together on the grand balcony of the estate, looking out over the manicured lawns. The cinematic, bright sunlight was beginning to set, casting warm, golden shadows over the stone.

"The European partners have agreed to the new maritime contracts," Alexander murmured, leaning against the balustrade. "The expansion is complete."

"You built an empire, Alexander," Anna smiled, leaning her head against his broad shoulder.

"I built a fortress," Alexander corrected softly, turning his head to look at her. His cold, intimidating eyes were warm and intensely devoted. "An empire is for wealth. A fortress is for family. I only care about protecting you and Emily."

He reached into the pocket of his tailored suit jacket and withdrew a small, velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless diamond ring. It was elegant, timeless, and completely unlike the ostentatious, heavy jewelry Meredith had worn.

"Anna," Alexander whispered, his deep, raspy voice filled with profound emotion. "I want you to sit by my side permanently. Marry me."

Anna gasped, her heart fluttering wildly. She looked at the ring, then up into the eyes of the apex predator who loved her completely. "Yes," she breathed. "Yes, Alexander."
