Chapter 8

The fire popped loudly, sending a shower of orange sparks up the chimney. Alexander sat in the heavy leather sofa, his dark three-piece suit looking stark against the warm glow of the room. Emily was still asleep against his chest, her small hands clutching his lapel.
Across the room, Anna adjusted her black skirt, trying to pull it down over her bandaged foot. The sudden intimacy of the situation was overwhelming. She was a maid, hired to clean and serve, yet she was sitting in the private sanctuary of the most feared man in the city, and he was staring at her with an intensity she couldn't decipher.
"What happens now, sir?" Anna asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence. She assumed her time in the house was over. Despite her actions, she had caused a massive scene in front of his capos. She fully expected to be handed her final paycheck and shown the door.
Alexander slowly shifted his gaze from the fire to her heart-shaped face. "What happens now is that you rest. The doctor said keep weight off the foot."
"I meant with my employment," Anna clarified, her hands twisting nervously in her lap. "I understand if you need to let me go. I broke protocol tonight."
"You broke protocol to save my daughter from walking on shattered glass," Alexander stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum. He tilted his head slightly, his thick, slightly wavy hair catching the light. "If you had followed protocol and allowed that woman to torture my child, I would have killed you myself."
Anna swallowed hard, the blunt reality of his violent world hitting her full force. She believed him entirely.
"You are not fired, Anna," Alexander continued smoothly. "However, you will no longer be working as a housemaid."
Anna’s expressive brows furrowed in confusion. "Sir?"
"The nanny we currently employ clearly failed to protect Emily when Meredith was present," Alexander explained, his tone completely businesslike, yet carrying a heavy undercurrent of absolute control. "She allowed access when she shouldn't have. She is being terminated tonight."
He looked down at the sleeping three-year-old, his expression softening dramatically.
"Emily trusts you," Alexander said softly. "She reached for your apron when she was terrified. She told you her secret. You proved your loyalty to my bloodline with your own pain."
He looked back up, his penetrating eyes locking onto Anna’s.
"I want you to take over as her primary caregiver," Alexander offered, though the tone heavily implied it was a command disguised as an offer. "You will not clean another floor in this house. You will have a private suite near Emily’s room. Your salary will be tripled, and you will answer to no one but me."
Anna stared at him, completely stunned. The promotion was unheard of. The jump in salary would change her life, allowing her to send money back to her struggling family in the Midwest. But she also understood the terrifying implications of accepting the offer. She would be stepping out of the shadows of the staff and directly into the inner circle of a dangerous, violent empire.
"Mr. Hayes, I... I don't have a background in childcare," Anna stammered, overwhelmed by the magnitude of the sudden shift. "I am just a maid."
"You are a woman who took a blade for a child that wasn't yours," Alexander corrected her firmly. "I can hire a hundred women with degrees in early childhood development, but I cannot teach them the kind of loyalty and courage you demonstrated tonight."
He gently shifted Emily in his arms, standing up slowly from the sofa. He walked across the Persian rug until he was standing directly in front of Anna’s chair. He looked down at her, towering over her, yet projecting a strange, protective warmth.
"I need someone I can trust," Alexander murmured, his deep voice wrapping around her. "I need someone who will stand between my daughter and the monsters in the dark. Can you be that person, Anna?"
Anna looked up into his dark, penetrating eyes. She saw the ruthless killer, but she also saw a desperate father asking for help to protect his only light. She took a deep breath, pushing her fear aside.

"Yes, Mr. Hayes," Anna said firmly. "I can."
A small, genuine smile finally touched the corners of Alexander's mouth. "Good. We will move your things to your new suite tomorrow."
