Chapter 5 - The Charity Gala Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Palmer House was shimmering with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the city’s elite socialites mingling for an annual pediatric cancer charity gala.

Sophia Reynolds stood near the grand entrance wearing a dazzling red silk gown, expertly positioning herself beside Vincent Moretti’s empty chair at the VIP head table.

She had spent the entire evening whispering to society reporters about how close she and Vincent were, hinting broadly that Claire’s sudden disappearance was proof of a crumbling, unstable marriage.

Noah sat beside her, proudly wearing a miniature tuxedo that Vincent’s mother had personally purchased for him.

When the double doors at the end of the ballroom swung open, a hush fell over the entire room as Vincent Moretti walked in.

He wasn't wearing his usual polished tuxedo with a smiling date on his arm.

He was flanked by four armed bodyguards, his expression carved from solid granite as he strode purposefully toward the VIP table.

Sophia’s face lit up with a triumphant, radiant smile as she stepped forward to greet him, holding Noah’s small hand.

Vincent, darling, we saved you a seat right here, she purred smoothly, batting her eyelashes for the surrounding photographers.

Noah missed you all day, and we thought—

Vincent walked right past her as if she were a ghost, his cold gaze locked entirely on his mother, Elena Moretti, who sat further down the table looking equally smug.

Mother, Vincent’s voice cut through the murmurs of the ballroom like a razor-sharp blade.

I suggest you pack your bags and leave this estate tonight.

Elena gasped, clutching her diamond necklace in sheer disbelief.

Vincent! Have you lost your mind?

How dare you speak to me this way in front of our friends over that ungrateful, dramatic wife of yours?

Vincent stopped, turning slowly to face his mother and Sophia, the ambient ballroom music fading into the background against his palpable aura of danger.

My wife is carrying my child, Vincent announced loudly enough for every prominent family in Chicago to hear.

And while I was busy playing house with another man's son to satisfy your pathetic social fantasies, my wife packed her bags and left me because of your toxic manipulation.

Sophia’s face turned the color of chalk, her red silk gown suddenly feeling like a straitjacket under the collective glare of a hundred scandalized socialites.

V-Vincent, you don't know what you're saying, she stammered, tears instantly welling in her eyes.

Claire poisoned your mind against us!

Vincent leaned down, his face inches from Sophia’s, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper that made her blood run cold.

If you or my mother ever come within a mile of my wife or my unborn child again, I won't just cut off your funding.

May you like

I will tear your entire fabricated life down to the bare dirt.

He turned on his heel, signaling his bodyguards to clear the path, leaving Sophia standing humiliated in the center of the ballroom floor as flashbulbs blinded her from every angle.
