CHAPTER 20 — The Morning Sun of a New Dynasty

The golden light of dawn filtered through the tall glass windows of the Milwaukee penthouse, casting long, peaceful shadows across the hardwood floor.
Claire Bennett sat at the kitchen island, holding a warm mug of black coffee, her eyes bloodshot from a night spent staring at the front door, waiting for the worst.
The elevator bell chimed softly down the private hallway.
Claire froze, her mug halfway to her lips as the sound of heavy, familiar footsteps approached her door.
A key turned in the deadbolt with a quiet click.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Vincent Moretti stepped inside.
He looked exhausted, his black tactical shirt stained with faint smudges of soot and dust, a small bandage resting just above his left eyebrow.
Yet, as his dark eyes locked onto Claire standing across the room, his shoulders relaxed as if a mountain had been lifted from his chest.
It’s over, Claire, Vincent said softly, his voice rough with fatigue.
They will never bother us again.
Claire didn't run to him immediately.
She set her mug down on the marble counter, walking slowly across the room until she stood mere inches away from him.
She reached out, her fingers gently touching the small bandage on his forehead, tracing the sharp line of his jaw.
You promised you’d come back to us, she whispered, a solitary tear breaking free and sliding down her cheek.
I always keep my promises to you, Claire, Vincent replied, wrapping his strong arms gently around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest.
I built an empire on blood and fear, but the only legacy I ever want to leave behind is the family we built together.
From the hallway, the sound of tiny footsteps pattering across the floor interrupted them.
Mommy? Daddy? a sleepy voice called out as little Leo rubbed his eyes, wandering into the kitchen wearing his favorite dinosaur pajamas.
Vincent dropped to one knee, opening his arms wide as his son ran straight into his embrace, laughing brightly as Vincent lifted him high into the air.
Let's go home, Vincent whispered, looking up at Claire with a warm, unwavering smile.
May you like
Our real home, together.
Claire smiled back, her hazel eyes shining with absolute peace, knowing that the longest, hardest storm of their lives had finally given way to an unbreakable, golden dawn.
