CHAPTER 17 — The Ghost of the South Side

The black sedan bolted away from the service gate with screeching tires, leaving behind a trail of blue exhaust smoke and terrified witnesses.

Vincent remained kneeling on the grass, his pistol raised, tracking the retreating vehicle until it vanished around the park bend.

He lowered his weapon slowly, his breathing heavy as he looked down to ensure Leo was completely unharmed.

Are you okay, buddy? Vincent asked, his deep voice trembling slightly despite his ironclad exterior.

Leo buried his face into Vincent’s shoulder, nodding tearfully while clutching a small plastic toy.

I was scared, Daddy.

Claire rushed forward, dropping to her knees on the damp grass, her hands trembling as she grabbed Vincent’s shoulders and pulled Leo into her own arms.

She searched her son’s body frantically for any sign of injury before lifting her tear-filled hazel eyes to meet Vincent’s dark, shadowed gaze.

You said they were gone, Vincent, Claire whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed trauma and rising anger.

You promised me that the underworld was dead and that our son would never have to live in the shadow of your past.

I know what I promised, Claire, Vincent answered, his jaw clenching as he stood up slowly, his posture reverting instantly to the ruthless syndicate kingpin he used to be.

That wasn't a random hit.

That was Marcus Salvatore, the son of the capo I drove out of the South Side five years ago.

He thinks because I laid down my crown, I’ve forgotten how to slaughter a traitor.

Claire stood up, stepping protectively in front of Leo, her gaze hard and unforgiving.

I don't care about your past wars, Vincent!

If you stay near us, you draw their crosshairs right to our son!

You need to run, or you need to end this permanently, because I will not let anyone hurt my little boy.

Vincent stared at the woman he loved more than life itself, realizing that redemption wasn't a destination you reached by signing legal papers; it was a debt you paid in blood.

He reached out, his calloused fingertips gently brushing a strand of hair from her forehead before his expression turned into absolute granite.

May you like

I’ll end it tonight, Claire, Vincent promised quietly.

And when I come back, no one will ever threaten our family again.
