Chapter 19 - The Confession of the Last Vance

Within two hours, the county sheriff’s station had reviewed the nursery footage.
The footage was indisputable.
It showed Isabella clearly forging Sofia’s name on the custody petition while looking nervously toward the stairs.
The corrupt emergency writ was immediately vacated by the supervising presiding judge.
Isabella sat in an interrogation room at the county annex, her hands cuffed to the steel table.
Dad and I stood on the other side of the one-way glass with the lead detective.
"She wants to speak to Robert Vance," the detective told Dad. "Only him. She says she has information about Adrian."
Dad took a deep, painful breath.
He opened the heavy steel door and walked inside.
Isabella looked up, her hair disheveled, her mask of elegance completely stripped away.
"You look just like him," Dad said softly, sitting across from her. "Adrian had your eyes."
Isabella let out a harsh, dry laugh.
"Don't pretend you care about him, Robert. You threw him to the wolves. You let your father destroy him."
"I didn't know," Dad whispered, genuine grief cracking his voice. "I swear to God, Isabella, I believed what our father told me. If I had known Adrian was innocent, I would have burned the company to the ground to protect him."
Tears suddenly slipped down Isabella’s cheeks, mixing with running mascara.
"He died thinking you hated him," she whispered, her voice cracking with decades of buried grief. "He died in a rented room in Seattle twelve years ago. He had nothing. While you lived in a palace."
"I am so sorry," Dad wept, burying his face in his hands. "I am so deeply sorry, Isabella."
For a moment, the room held a tragic, fragile humanity.
Two broken family members grieving the same dead man.
Then Isabella looked at Dad with a chilling, hollow smile.
"You think locking me up ends this, Robert?" she whispered.
Dad looked up, wiping his eyes. "What do you mean?"
"I wasn't working alone," Isabella murmured, leaning forward so her chains rattled against the steel. "Who do you think gave me the security codes to your nursery? Who do you think paid my five-hundred-thousand-dollar bond this morning?"
Dad froze.
"Who, Isabella?"
May you like
Isabella smiled, a venomous, triumphant grin.
"Ask your wife, Robert. Ask Clara where she was when the wire transfer was authorized."
