Chapter 18 - The Truth in the Yellow Folder

"Mommy!" Lily’s high-pitched voice echoed across the courtyard.
Every single person—the deputies, Isabella, Dad, Marcello—turned toward the front steps.
Lily walked down the stone stairs with absolute confidence, clutching the yellow folder to her chest.
"Lily, stay back!" Dad yelled, trying to shield her.
Lily didn't stop.
She walked right past her grandfather, directly up to the tall deputy sheriff.
"You're a policeman," Lily said, looking up at his badge with her bright eyes.
The deputy looked down, surprised by the toddler's complete lack of fear.
"Yes, little lady, I am."
Lily held out the yellow folder.
"My mommy said policemen help people who tell the truth."
The deputy took the folder, frowning. "What is this?"
"The red lady didn't sign the paper," Lily said clearly. "I saw Auntie Isabella write Sofia’s name with her left hand in the kitchen when Sofia was sleeping."
Isabella lunged forward. "Shut that brat up!"
Marcello immediately stepped between Isabella and Lily, his body rigid as iron. "Don't you dare touch my niece."
The deputy opened the folder.
Inside was not just Sofia’s birth certificate and medical discharge papers.
Taped to the inside cover was a USB flash drive from our nursery security camera.
"What's on the drive?" the deputy asked.
"Isabella signing Sofia's signature on the custody waiver while Sofia was unconscious on the couch," I said firmly. "Lily was playing under the kitchen table with her blocks when it happened. She saw Isabella practice the signature five times on scratch paper."
The deputy looked at Isabella.
Her face had turned the color of chalk.
"Is this true, Ms. Vance?"
"She’s three years old!" Isabella screeched. "You’re taking the word of a three-year-old child over a signed legal document?!"
"No, ma'am," the senior deputy replied cold-eyed. "I'm looking at a recorded security drive and a criminal allegation of forgery in my presence."

He turned to his partner.
"Call the state bureau. Detain Ms. Vance pending forensic verification of this order."
