Chapter 12 - The Name on the Floorboards

Morning arrived with gray autumn clouds hanging heavy over the estate.

I did not sleep another second.

I kept the red key hidden in my pocket, its cold metal burning against my thigh.

Downstairs in the kitchen, Mom was humming softly while making blueberry pancakes.

Dad sat at the mahogany kitchen island, reading the local paper with reading glasses perched on his nose.

It looked like the picture of an ordinary, happy American family.

Yet beneath that surface lay generations of buried truths.

Lily padded into the kitchen in her dinosaur slippers, carrying her favorite teddy bear.

"Good morning, pumpkin," Dad said, smiling warmly and setting down his mug.

Lily walked straight past his outstretched arms and stopped in front of Mom.

"Grandma, does Aunt Celeste have red shoes?" Lily asked plainly.

Mom froze with the spatula hovering over the griddle.

The color drained from Mom’s cheeks in a single breath.

"Why do you ask that, Lily?" Mom’s voice was carefully controlled, but brittle.

"Aunt Celeste wore red shoes when she put the secret inside my wall," Lily said, tilting her head.

Dad looked up, his brow furrowing deeply.

"What secret, Lily? What are you talking about?"

I stepped forward from the doorway before Mom could change the subject.

I pulled the red-lacquered key from my pocket and laid it flat on the marble island.

The metallic clink echoed through the sudden silence.

Dad stared at the key, and his eyes went wide with genuine shock.

"Where did you find this?" he asked, his voice shaking.

"Lily found it," I answered steadily. "In a hidden compartment behind her baseboard. Marked with Adrian’s name."

Mom dropped the spatula onto the counter.

Her hands were visibly shaking.

"Celeste swore she burned everything," Mom whispered, leaning against the counter for support.

"Burned what, Clara?" Dad’s voice turned dangerously quiet. "What did your sister have to do with Adrian?"

For years, Dad had blamed himself for Adrian’s downfall.

He believed Adrian had stolen from the family business and vanished in shame.

Mom looked at Dad, tears welling in her eyes.

"Adrian didn't steal that money, Robert," Mom sobbed quietly. "Celeste did. And my father framed Adrian to protect our family's reputation."

The kitchen became dead silent.

The foundation of Dad’s entire life shifted in an instant.
