Chapter 9 - The Confrontation at the Art Institute Gala

Three days later,
the Grand Staircase of the Art Institute of Chicago was draped in red velvet carpet,
illuminated by towering chandeliers and the flashing cameras of local media reporters.
The annual Chicago Business & Arts Gala was in full swing.
The city's wealthiest philanthropists,
venture capitalists,
and political figures walked the carpet in designer tuxedos and glittering gowns.
Clara Vance arrived in a stunning emerald-green satin dress,
her hair styled in elegant waves,
wearing a diamond necklace that had once belonged to her grandmother.
Beside her stood Marcus Vance and several international tech investors who had just finalized a fifty-million-dollar expansion deal with Vance Global Capital.
She smiled for the photographers,
her face glowing with absolute confidence,
poise,
and reclaimed freedom.
She was no longer the hidden,
ignored wife working behind the scenes.
She was the undisputed titan of Chicago finance.
Suddenly,
a commotion broke out at the bottom of the grand staircase.
"Let me through!"
a raw,
unhinged voice screamed from the entrance security checkpoint.
"I need to speak to her!"
"Clara!"
"CLARA!"
The crowd of high-society guests turned in shock,
gasping as a man forced his way past the red velvet ropes.
It was Ethan.
He looked like an unhinged beggar.
His suit jacket was gone,
his white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar,
his shoes were covered in mud,
and his face was pale,
wild,
and sweaty.
The security guards grabbed his arms,
but Ethan fought against them with frantic,
manic strength,
his eyes locked onto Clara at the top of the stairs.
"Clara!"
Ethan shrieked,
tears streaming down his dirty face as the crowd whispered frantically around him.
"Please!"
"Talk to me!"
"Stop the prosecutors!"
"They are going to indict me tomorrow!"
"I have nowhere to live,
Clara!"
"I'm sleeping in my car... no,
they took my car!"
"I'm sleeping on a bench!"
"I haven't eaten in two days!"
The photographers quickly turned their cameras away from the art exhibits,
flashing dozens of bright lights directly into Ethan's panicked face.
Click! Click! Click!
The sound of shutters filled the air,
capturing the disgraced co-founder in his ultimate moment of pathetic ruin.
Clara did not run.
She did not look embarrassed.
She slowly walked down three steps of the velvet staircase,
looking down at Ethan with a cold,
measured detachment that froze the entire room into absolute silence.
"Ethan,"
she said softly,
her voice carrying effortlessly through the quiet hall.
"You spent five years treating my generosity as your birthright."
"You spent five years believing I was too quiet to notice your betrayals."
"You took my money,"
"you used my credit,"
"you took my trust,"
"and you used it to buy silk gowns and luxury weddings for another woman."
"Clara... I was stupid!"
Ethan sobbed,
dropping to his knees on the red carpet as the guards pinned his arms behind his back.
"I was foolish!"
"I loved you!"
"I still love you!"
"Just give me a second chance!"
"Pay off the prosecutors!"
"Give me a job!"
"Anything!"
Clara walked down one more step,
stopping just out of his reach.
"You never loved me,
Ethan,"
she said,
her eyes shining with cold clarity.
"You loved my bank account."
"You loved my collateral."
"You loved the shadow I allowed you to stand in so you could pretend to be a king."
She leaned down slightly,
her voice dropping into a sharp,
unforgiving whisper that only he could hear.
"The bank is closed,
Ethan."
"Permanent decline."
She stood up straight,
turned to the chief of security,
and gave a subtle nod.
"Remove him from the building,"
Clara instructed calmly.
"He is ruining the atmosphere."
The two massive security guards hoisted Ethan off his knees,
dragging him backward out the glass doors into the rain,
his desperate screams fading into the noisy Chicago night as the doors swung shut.
Clara turned back to her investors,
adjusted her emerald dress,
and smiled.
"Shall we proceed to the main gallery,
gentlemen?"
she asked smoothly.
The investors applauded,
May you like
following her into the hall,
leaving the ghost of Ethan Cole completely behind.
