Chapter 3 - Schedule C and the Echoes of a Broken Empire

The dining room descended into absolute,

deafening silence.

Ethan stood frozen,

his mouth slightly open,

his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

The gaze of twenty guests—his friends,

his future in-laws,

his business associates—was pinned directly on him.

Vanessa gasped,

stepping back from him as if he carried a contagious disease.

"Clara?"

Vanessa whispered,

her eyes wide with sudden panic and fury.

"What does Clara have to do with your credit cards?"

"You told me those were your corporate accounts!"

"They are my accounts!"

Ethan yelled,

his composure shattering completely as panic surged through his blood.

He pulled his phone from his pocket,

his fingers trembling violently as he opened his banking app.

He logged in,

expecting to see his familiar balance.

Instead,

a stark red notification flashed across the screen:

ACCESS DENIED. AUTHORIZED USER REMOVED.

"No,"

he breathed,

a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.

"No,

no,

no!"

He frantically dialed Clara's direct line.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then went straight to voicemail.

He dialed again.

Voicemail.

He turned to the manager,

his face pale,

his air of polished sophistication completely destroyed.

"Look,"

"there is a massive misunderstanding."

"I will pay you tomorrow morning as soon as the banks open."

"That is not an option,

Mr. Cole,"

the manager stated flatly,

folding his arms.

"Either someone at this table provides a valid form of payment right now,"

"or we call the authorities."

Ethan turned desperately to his best man,

Julian.

"Julian,"

"bro,"

"put it on your card."

"I'll wire you the money first thing in the morning."

Julian looked at Ethan with deep embarrassment,

hesitating before slowly reaching into his jacket to pull out a personal card.

"This is ridiculous,

Ethan,"

Julian muttered,

handing his card to the manager.

"You said you were multi-millionaire founder material."

"What the hell is going on?"

While Julian settled the massive dinner bill,

Vanessa grabbed Ethan by his lapel,

dragging him away from the table toward the corridor near the restrooms.

Her face was contorted with rage,

her polished demeanor completely gone.

"What did you do,

Ethan?"

she hissed,

her voice trembling with venom.

"Is the wedding paid for?"

"Tell me the Langford Grand is paid for!"

"Of course it's paid for!"

Ethan lied,

though a sickening knot of terror was twisting violently in his stomach.

"I put the deposit down weeks ago!"

"You better be right,"

Vanessa threatened,

pointing a manicured finger directly at his chest.

"My family flew in from New York for this."

"If there is even one single glitch on Saturday,"

"I will destroy you."

Ethan didn't answer.

He broke away from her and ran out of the restaurant into the night,

pulling his phone back out as he stood on the cold sidewalk.

He dialed his divorce attorney,

Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur answered on the fourth ring,

sounding tired and annoyed.

"Ethan?"

"It's eight thirty at night."

"What is it?"

"Arthur!"

Ethan screamed into the phone,

pacing frantically on the pavement.

"Clara just froze all my cards!"

"She canceled my access!"

"My cards just got declined at my own rehearsal dinner!"

"You need to file an emergency injunction right now!"

"She's violating our divorce settlement!"

There was a long pause on the other end of the line.

The sound of paper rustling filled the receiver.

"Ethan,"

Arthur said slowly,

his tone cold and clinical.

"Did you read Schedule C of the final agreement you signed two hours ago?"

"What?"

Ethan stammered.

"No!"

"I signed where you told me to sign!"

"You said it was standard language!"

"Schedule C,"

Arthur explained with terrifying clarity,

"explicitly states that all personal credit lines attached to Clara Vance’s personal name or corporate collateral would be revoked effective immediately upon signing."

"It also states that you acknowledge full personal responsibility for all debts accrued on those lines for non-corporate expenditures."

"She didn't violate the settlement,

Ethan."

"She executed it."

"You signed away your credit protection the second your pen hit that paper."

Ethan felt the world tilt around him.

The tall skyscrapers of Chicago seemed to lean inward,

crushing down on him.

"Wait,"

Ethan gasped,

clutching his chest as hyperventilation set in.

"The venue..."

"The Langford Grand Hotel..."

"The final balance of fifty thousand dollars was scheduled to auto-charge to card four four eight two tomorrow morning..."

"Then I suggest you find fifty thousand dollars in cash by nine o'clock tomorrow morning,"

Arthur said coldly.

"Because Clara Vance doesn't owe you another dime."

"And frankly,

Ethan,"

"neither do I."

"Goodnight."

The call disconnected.

Ethan stood on the freezing street corner,

staring blankly at the dark screen of his phone,

as the realization finally washed over him like ice water.

He had played the master manipulator for years.

But Clara had just executed the perfect checkmate.
