Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege and the Price of Embezzlement

At eight o'clock the following morning,
Ethan rushed into the sleek,
glass-walled headquarters of Vance & Cole Financial Technologies.
He hadn't slept a single minute.
His suit was wrinkled,
his eyes were bloodshot,
and his hands were cold with sweat.
He had called five different banks during the night,
trying to secure a emergency personal loan,
only to find that without Clara’s high-value real estate as collateral,
his personal credit rating was worthless.
His only remaining hope lay inside the company bank accounts.
As co-founder,
he believed he could transfer fifty thousand dollars from the corporate reserve account into his personal checking account,
pay the Langford Grand Hotel,
and save his wedding before Vanessa found out.
He marched toward his corner office,
intending to log into the corporate portal from his desktop terminal.
As he reached the executive suite,
he noticed that the door to the primary boardroom was wide open.
Inside sat the entire Board of Directors.
At the head of the long conference table sat Clara.
She was dressed impeccably in a tailored navy blue suit,
her dark hair pinned back with sharp precision.
Beside her were two men in dark gray suits carrying briefcase folders,
along with the firm’s lead forensic accountant.
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks.
Clara looked up,
her eyes cool,
calm,
and entirely unbothered by his presence.
"Good morning,
Ethan,"
she said softly.
"You're late for the emergency board meeting."
"What board meeting?"
Ethan demanded,
stepping into the room,
his voice trembling with defensive anger.
"What is going on here,
Clara?"
"Why are the investors here?"
Marcus Vance,
the primary investor and Clara’s uncle,
stood up from his seat at the far end of the table.
His face was grim,
his eyes filled with cold disappointment.
"Sit down,
Ethan,"
Marcus ordered.
"I don't have time to sit down!"
Ethan snapped,
trying to project authority he no longer possessed.
"I have urgent personal business to attend to today!"
"I am taking a temporary bridge loan of fifty thousand dollars from our capital reserves."
"I'll repay it next quarter."
The forensic accountant chuckled softly,
shaking his head as he opened a thick black binder.
"You won't be taking anything from capital reserves,
Mr. Cole,"
the accountant said firmly.
"In fact,"
"you no longer have authorization to access any corporate funds."
"What are you talking about?"
Ethan yelled.
"I am the co-founder of this company!"
"You were the co-founder,"
Clara corrected him smoothly,
folding her hands neatly on the table.
"Until six thirty this morning,"
"when a full forensic audit of your corporate expense accounts was submitted to the board."
She slid a heavy document across the smooth glass table toward him.
Ethan stared at the first page.
It was a complete line-by-line itemization of every single purchase he had made over the past eighteen months.
"During your tenure,"
Clara explained,
her voice ringing clear across the silent room,
"you systematically diverted over four hundred thousand dollars of company money for personal use."
"You submitted false invoices for 'client consulting,' "
"which were actually payments made to luxury fashion houses in Paris."
"You claimed travel expenses for corporate expansion,"
"which were actually weekend getaways with Miss Vanessa Cole in Cabo and Saint-Tropez."
"And worst of all,"
"you attempted to pass off your upcoming wedding venue deposit at the Langford Grand as an 'annual shareholder gala.'"
Ethan’s knees felt weak.
He gripped the edge of the conference table to keep himself from collapsing.
"Clara..."
he choked out,
his voice barely a whisper.
"You... you signed off on those reports..."
"I signed off on them when I was your wife and trusted your word,"
Clara said,
her gaze locking onto his with razor-sharp intensity.
"I stopped trusting you six months ago."
"Since then,"
"I simply documented every single illegal transaction you made."
"I allowed you to dig your own grave,"
"and yesterday,"
"when you signed the divorce papers,"
"you signed your confession."
Marcus Vance stepped forward,
placing a legal document directly in front of Ethan.
"Ethan Cole,"
Marcus stated,
"by unanimous vote of the board,"
"your executive powers are hereby revoked."
"Your corporate shares are frozen pending criminal investigation for corporate embezzlement."
"Security is currently clearing out your office."
May you like
"You have five minutes to leave the premises,"
"or you will be escorted out in handcuffs."
