Chapter 2 - The Golden Card Declines at the Langford Grand

The atmosphere inside Prime 108 was electric,

filled with the low murmur of high-society chatter,

the clinking of crystal glasses,

and the aroma of aged steaks and truffle oil.

Ethan Cole sat at the head of a long,

mahogany dining table surrounded by twenty of his closest friends,

investors,

and family members.

Beside him sat Vanessa Cole,

wearing a white lace dress that had cost four thousand dollars,

laughing loudly at a joke made by Ethan's best man.

Ethan leaned back in his chair,

swirling a glass of vintage Cabernet,

feeling the warm flush of absolute success.

He had successfully divorced the woman who kept asking annoying questions about invoices,

he was forty-eight hours away from marrying the woman of his dreams,

and his social standing in Chicago was higher than ever.

"To Ethan and Vanessa!"

his brother raised a glass,

calling out to the table.

"To the couple who has it all!"

"To us,"

Vanessa purred,

leaning over to kiss Ethan’s cheek,

her eyes shining with the pride of someone who had successfully secured a life of luxury.

Ethan smiled,

drinking deeply from his glass.

"Thank you,

everyone,"

he announced,

standing up and smoothing his gray tailored suit.

"Tonight is just the beginning."

"Saturday at the Langford Grand is going to be an event this city will talk about for years."

The table applauded,

cheering for the man they believed was an immensely wealthy corporate co-founder.

At the edge of the private dining room,

the head maitre d’ stood quietly,

holding a leather check presenter containing the bill for the evening's dinner.

Ethan caught his eye and gave a slight,

patronizing nod,

waving the man over.

"Bring me the check,"

Ethan said smoothly,

pulling his silver money clip from his pocket.

The maitre d’ approached,

placing the leather folder on the table.

The total came to nine thousand four hundred and fifty dollars,

excluding the gratuity.

Ethan didn't even glance at the itemized breakdown.

He slipped a dark matte-black credit card from his wallet,

slid it into the folder,

and handed it back to the waiter with a careless flick of his wrist.

"Take care of it,"

Ethan said casually,

turning back to talk to an investor seated to his right.

"As I was saying,

Julian,"

"our Q4 projections are looking phenomenal."

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Ethan noticed the maitre d’ standing a short distance away,

looking visibly uncomfortable while whispering to the restaurant general manager.

Ethan frowned,

checking his watch.

"What is taking so long?"

Vanessa asked,

pouting slightly as she adjusted her diamond bracelet.

"They should know who you are,

Ethan."

"I'll handle it,"

Ethan muttered,

feeling a minor prick of annoyance.

He motioned for the general manager to come over.

The manager walked over slowly,

holding the leather check presenter close to his chest,

his expression tense and professional.

"Is there a problem?"

Ethan asked,

his voice carrying a sharp edge of authority.

"Mr. Cole,"

the manager began quietly,

leaning in so the rest of the table wouldn't hear.

"We ran the card you provided."

"And?"

Ethan demanded.

"It was declined,

sir."

A ripple of awkward silence settled over the immediate seats.

Ethan chuckled nervously,

shaking his head as if the manager had made a ridiculous mistake.

"Declined?"

"That's impossible."

"It's an unlimited corporate card."

"Run it again."

"We ran it three times,

Mr. Cole,"

the manager replied politely but firmly.

"The terminal returns a specific code: Account Revoked / Contact Cardholder."

Ethan's face flushed red with sudden embarrassment.

He felt Vanessa's sharp gaze turn toward him,

her smile fading into a look of skeptical concern.

"There must be a system glitch with the bank,"

Ethan said quickly,

reaching into his wallet and pulling out a second card,

a sleek gold corporate reserve card.

"Here."

"Use this one."

"My apologies for our system errors tonight,

everyone,"

Ethan announced to the table,

trying to laugh it off.

"The banks are updating their networks tonight,

it seems."

The manager took the gold card and walked back toward the register.

Vanessa leaned in close,

her voice dropping into a tense whisper.

"Ethan,"

"what is going on?"

"My father is sitting right there."

"If that card declines too,"

"I will be utterly humiliated."

"Relax,"

Ethan snapped under his breath.

"It's just a clerical error."

"Clara probably forgot to transfer the quarterly funds into the primary account before we signed the papers today."

"She's always being careless with administrative details."

A moment later,

the manager returned.

This time,

he was accompanied by two discreet security guards who stood near the entrance of the private room.

The manager's expression had hardened entirely.

"Mr. Cole,"

the manager said,

his voice loud enough for the adjacent guests to hear.

"The second card has also been declined."

"In fact,"

"the authorization network indicates that your authorization status has been completely terminated by the primary account owner,

Clara Vance."

"We cannot accept any further cards under your name."

May you like

"We require immediate payment for nine thousand four hundred and fifty dollars,"

"or we will be forced to contact the Chicago Police Department for theft of services."
