Chapter 6 - The Eviction, the Seized Penthouse, and the Empty Garage

The cold autumn wind howled down Michigan Avenue,
whistling through the tall concrete canyons of downtown Chicago.
Ethan Cole stood before the grand glass entrance of his high-rise residence,
clutching his scuffed leather briefcase against his chest like a shield.
His head throbbed with a terrifying intensity,
each heartbeat echoing the humiliating screams of Vanessa Cole from just hours prior.
He dragged his heavy,
exhausted feet across the polished marble lobby,
heading straight toward the private elevator bank.
The building doorman,
a man named Hector who had bowed to Ethan for four long years,
did not smile.
He did not tip his hat.
He did not open the door.
Instead,
Hector stepped out from behind his brass desk,
his expression stern,
holding a clipboard tightly against his side.
"Mr. Cole,"
Hector said,
his tone cold,
devoid of the usual deference.
"I'm afraid I cannot let you proceed to the penthouse."
Ethan froze,
his blood running cold once again.
"What do you mean,
Hector?"
Ethan snapped,
trying to force a tone of authority that felt completely hollow.
"I live there."
"I own the top floor."
"Get out of my way."
"Actually,
sir,"
Hector said calmly,
sliding a legal notice out from under his clipboard,
"you do not own the residence."
"The penthouse lease,"
"along with the building security deposit,"
"was held entirely under the corporate umbrella of Vance Enterprises."
"At eight o'clock this morning,"
"Miss Clara Vance's legal counsel served the building management with a court injunction."
"The lease has been terminated."
"The locks have already been re-keyed."
Ethan stared at the paper as if it were written in an ancient,
dead language.
"Re-keyed?"
he shrieked,
his voice cracking in front of two residents standing near the lobby mailboxes.
"My clothes are up there!"
"My watches!"
"My passport!"
"My tailor-made suits!"
"All personal property inside the unit,"
Hector recited monotonically,
"has been cataloged by a court-appointed receiver."
"It is currently held as collateral against the personal liabilities outlined in your divorce decree."
"You are not permitted entry to the property,
Mr. Cole."
"If you attempt to ascend in the elevator,"
"we are instructed to call the police immediately."
Panic,
raw and unadulterated,
clawed at Ethan's throat.
"Where am I supposed to go?"
he yelled,
grabbing Hector by the forearm.
"Where do you expect me to sleep?!"
Hector brushed Ethan’s hand away with quiet contempt.
"That is no longer the concern of this building's management,
sir."
"Now,"
"I must ask you to leave the lobby."
"You are trespassing."
Ethan backed away,
his breath coming in short,
gasping hitches.
He turned on his heel and rushed out the side entrance toward the private parking garage,
thinking he could at least sit inside his pristine,
custom silver Porsche 911.
He had bought that car two years ago.
He loved that car more than he had ever loved Clara.
It was the ultimate symbol of his status,
his speed,
his sleek dominance over life.
He hit the concrete basement ramps,
his dress shoes slapping loudly against the painted floor.
He rounded the corner toward space number one.
The space was completely empty.
Where his shiny sports car usually stood,
there was only a bright orange traffic cone and a yellow towing slip taped to the concrete wall.
Ethan ran to the wall,
ripping the yellow paper off with frantic fingers.
NOTICE OF REPOSSESSION,
the bold red letters printed across the top read.
VEHICLE LEASE TERMINATED DUE TO DEFAULT ON CORPORATE GUARANTEE.
GUARANTOR: CLARA VANCE.
Ethan fell against the concrete pillar,
the paper slipping from his hands,
fluttering down into a puddle of dirty water on the garage floor.
Clara had not just severed his credit cards.
She had systematically dismantled every pillar of his daily existence.
She had taken his money,
his clothes,
his home,
his car,
his title,
and his pride.
He sat on the damp garage floor,
May you like
curled against the cold concrete pillar,
surrounded by the echoing darkness of an empire he had built on another woman’s back.
