Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Threshold

The grand lobby of the financial tower was a cavernous space filled with white marble
security turnstiles
and high-end espresso bars.
Dozens of corporate executives
lawyers
and analysts walked through the revolving doors
stopping to stare at the scene unfolding near the security desk.
Liam stood in the center of the lobby
looking completely unraveled.
His expensive tuxedo from the wedding was gone
replaced by a wrinkled button-down shirt and unpressed trousers.
His hair was disheveled
dark circles hung beneath his eyes
and his hands trembled visibly at his sides.
Beside him stood my mother
clutching a leather handbag
her face pale and streaked with mascara stains.
"I have a right to see my sister!" Liam screamed at two tall security officers who were blocking his path to the elevators.
"She stole my company!
She destroyed my life's work!
Call her down here right now!"
My mother noticed the elevator chiming and saw me step out onto the marble floor
flanked by Marcus and two corporate security detail members.
"Meredith!" my mother shrieked
pushing past the security officer and running toward me.
"Meredith
thank God!
Tell these men to let us up!
Look at what you've done to your brother!"
I stopped five paces away from them
keeping my expression completely neutral
my hands folded neatly in front of me.
Liam pushed forward
his eyes red-rimmed and filled with a volatile mixture of rage and terror.
"You think you're clever
don't you?" Liam spat
his voice cracking loudly in the vast marble hall.
"You went behind my back to Gerald Callaway!
You poisoned Sienna against me!
She canceled the wedding
Meredith!
Her father froze my corporate accounts!
My board voted to remove me two hours ago!"
"You removed yourself
Liam
" I replied
my voice calm
steady
and echoing clearly off the high marble walls.
"You removed yourself the day you decided to build a business on stolen intellectual property.
You lied to investors
you lied to your fiancée
and you lied to the world."
"It was a family venture!" Liam shouted
taking a step closer until my security guards stepped between us.
"You gave me that code!
You gave it to me four years ago!"
"I gave you a temporary consulting prototype under a written agreement that you breached
" I corrected him coldly.
"You paid fifteen hundred dollars out of ten thousand.
You erased my name from the documentation.
And you told Mom and Dad that I was just a low-level failure who worked in basic IT."
My mother stepped into the space between Liam and me
her hands trembling as she reached out
attempting to grab my wrist.
I took a swift
graceful step backward
leaving her hands hovering in empty air.
"Meredith
please!" my mother cried
her voice high-pitched and desperate.
"Look at your brother!
He hasn't slept in three days!
The banks are threatening to repossess his car!
The lawyers are talking about criminal fraud charges!
If he goes to jail
our family name will be ruined forever!"
"You were never concerned about our family name when you were mocking me at the wedding
Mom
" I said
my eyes locking onto hers with unwavering force.
"You had no problem telling Gerald Callaway that you didn't brag about me.
You had no problem letting Liam call me a failure in front of two hundred guests.
Where was your concern for family then?"
My mother froze
her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water
unable to find a single words to justify years of casual cruelty.
Liam pointed a shaking finger at my face.
"I will sue you!" he threatened
his voice echoing across the crowded lobby as dozens of onlookers filmed the encounter on their phones.
"I will take every dollar Callaway gave you!
I built Vidia!
My name is on the company!"
Marcus stepped forward
pulling a document from his coat pocket.
"Mr. Vance
" Marcus said with authoritative authority.
"I am Marcus Vance
COO of Aetheris Systems.
I suggest you read this before you speak another word."
Marcus handed the paper to Liam.
Liam snatched it
his eyes darting across the text as his face turned from red to an ash-gray white.
"What is this?" Liam whispered
his voice suddenly dropping into absolute panic.
"That is a formal notice of legal action from Hion Systems' intellectual property division
" Marcus explained smoothly.
"Along with an official cease-and-desist from Callaway Ventures.
If you attempt to contact Ms. Vance
step onto this property
or speak to the press
criminal fraud charges will be filed with the federal prosecutor's office within twenty-four hours."
Liam dropped the paper onto the marble floor.
My father
who had been standing silently near the revolving glass doors the entire time
finally walked forward.
He looked tired
old
and completely broken.
He looked at Liam
then at my mother
and finally turned his eyes toward me.
For thirty-three years
my father had remained silent while my mother and brother belittled me.
His silence had been his consent.
"Meredith..." my father said softly
his voice choked with heavy regret.
"Is there... is there no way to fix this?"
I looked at my father for a long
agonizing second.
"No
Dad
" I said
feeling the final cord of attachment snap painlessly inside my chest.
"It was fixed the moment I stopped letting you use me."
I turned my back on all three of them
May you like
surrounded by my security detail
and walked back toward the elevators without looking behind me once.
