Chapter 2 - The Cracks in the Glass House

The library of the Callaway estate was a massive
oak-paneled room lined with thousands of leather-bound books and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the illuminated gardens.
Gerald walked in first
turning on a brass desk lamp that cast warm gold light across a large mahogany table.
I walked in behind him
my movements deliberate and composed.
Behind me came Liam
his face tight with panic
followed closely by our parents and Sienna.
My mother immediately closed the double doors behind us
as if locking out the outside world could somehow stop the nightmare that was unfolding for her favorite child.
"Gerald
please
" my mother began
her hands fluttering nervously around her pearl necklace.
"This is all just a terrible misunderstanding.
Family members share ideas all the time.
Liam is a visionary.
He has been working day and night on Vidia for four years.
Meredith is just a salaried employee.
She doesn't understand how real business works."
Gerald sat down behind the mahogany desk
crossed his arms
and looked at my mother with icy cold composure.
"Mrs. Vance
" Gerald said softly
"I suggest you stop speaking.
Every time you open your mouth
you demonstrate a breathtaking ignorance of both intellectual property law and technical architecture."
My mother gasped
her cheeks burning with humiliation.
She turned to my father for support
but my father remained silent
staring at the Persian rug beneath his feet as if he had suddenly realized the ground was giving way beneath him.
Liam stepped forward
trying desperately to regain control of his slipping narrative.
"Gerald
look at me
" Liam pleaded
his voice rising in pitch.
"Even if Meredith wrote the initial prototype code—which was just a basic proof-of-concept
mind you—I am the one who built the company!
I am the one who raised the seed capital!
I am the one who pitched to Callaway Ventures!
I made the technology commercial!"
"You built a company on a foundation you didn't own
" Gerald replied coldly.
"In the tech world
Liam
that is not vision.
That is fraud."
Sienna walked over to Liam
her eyes searchingly scanning his pale
sweaty face.
"Liam
" she whispered
her voice cracked with emotion.
"Is this true?
Did you take her code?"
"No!
Sienna
baby
listen to me!" Liam shouted
his composure completely breaking down.
"She helped me!
She was my sister!
I paid her!"
I looked at Liam
feeling a cold
sad clarity wash over me.
"You paid me fifteen hundred dollars
Liam
" I said
my voice echoing off the high oak walls.
"After promising ten thousand dollars and co-architect credit on the core platform."
Liam whirled around to face me
his eyes wide with fury.
"You bitter
selfish bitch!" he screamed.
"I am your brother!
I was building something for our family!
You sat in your comfortable little job at Hion while I took all the risks!
How dare you bring this up at my wedding!
How dare you try to ruin my life!"
"I didn't bring it up
Liam
" I said quietly.
"You dragged me over to Gerald to make fun of me.
You called me your family failure in front of two hundred people.
You and Mom have spent the last four years telling everyone I was a loser who worked in basic IT
while you used my code to build your reputation."
Gerald leaned forward
resting his elbows on the polished wood.
"Meredith
" Gerald asked
his tone turning sharp and professional
"do you have documentation proving that the architecture powering Vidia was originally authored by you?"
Liam lunged toward me
his hands clenched into fists.
"Don't answer that
Meredith!" he yelled.
Before he could reach me
Gerald stood up and slammed his hand down on the desk with a thunderous crack.
"Touch her or threaten her in my house
Liam
and I will have my security team throw you off this property before you can take another breath!" Gerald roared.
Liam stopped dead in his tracks
breathing heavily
his eyes wild with desperation.
My mother burst into tears
covering her face with her hands.
"How could you do this to your own brother
Meredith?" she sobbed.
"He is family!
Family is supposed to protect each other!
You are destroying his marriage!
You are destroying his future!"
I looked at my mother
the woman who had spend decades making me feel small
invisible
and useless.
"Family is supposed to love each other
Mom
" I said
my voice steady as steel.
"Not steal from each other and treat the victim like garbage."
I turned back to Gerald Callaway.
"To answer your question
Mr. Callaway
" I said calm and clear
"yes.
I have complete documentation.
I have timestamped commit logs from four years ago on my personal repository.
I have the original architecture specification diagrams written in my own hand.
I have the signed consulting agreement that Liam breached.
And I have the email Liam sent me at two in the morning begging me to fix his broken code before his first pitch."
Gerald smiled—a slow
dangerous smile that signaled the end of my brother’s illusion.
"Bring it to my office at eight o'clock tomorrow morning
Meredith
" Gerald said.
"Because as of right now
Callaway Ventures is freezing all negotiations with Vidia."
Liam fell back into an armchair
May you like
his face buried in his hands
as the reality of his complete collapse settled over the room.
