Chapter 12 - The Puppet of Desperation

The fluorescent lights of the suburban diner flickered overhead,

buzzing with a low,

irritating hum that matched the grease-stained atmosphere of the small booth.

Liam Vance sat in the corner,

wearing a faded,

wrinkled hoodie pulled low over his forehead.

His stubble was thick,

unshaven,

and graying around his jaw.

Six months ago,

he was driving a hundred-thousand-dollar Italian sports car,

wearing custom Italian suits,

and planning a million-dollar wedding at a private estate.

Now,

he had forty-seven dollars left in his checking account,

a court-ordered restitution mandate hanging over his head,

and a criminal record that prevented him from securing even an entry-level sales job.

Opposite him sat Julian Thorne,

the Senior Vice President of Nexus Dynamics.

Julian wore a three-thousand-dollar tailored wool coat,

a diamond-encrusted tie clip,

and possessed a smile that belonged to a predator.

Julian casually slid a crisp,

white envelope across the sticky laminate table.

Liam’s eyes darted down to the envelope,

his breath catching in his throat.

"What is that?"

Liam asked,

his voice rasping from heavy smoking and stress.

"That is ten thousand dollars in un-traceable cash,

Liam,"

Julian whispered softly,

leaning over the table like a snake offering forbidden fruit.

"A small token of goodwill from Nexus Dynamics.

And there is half a million more waiting in an offshore account in the Cayman Islands,

completely clear of your court restitution obligations,

the moment you sign the document inside."

Liam’s hands trembled violently as he picked up the envelope,

his fingers clutching the thick stack of bills inside.

"What document?"

Liam stammered,

his eyes wide with desperate hunger.

Julian pulled a sleek leather folder from his briefcase and laid it open between them.

Inside was a multi-page legal affidavit prepared by Nexus's top corporate attorneys.

"It is a sworn statement,

Liam,"

Julian explained,

his voice dripping with calculated persuasion.

"Stating that during your time as Chief Executive Officer of Vidia Enterprises,

Meredith Vance did not build the core architecture independently.

It states that you,

along with a team of independent developers hired by Vidia,

co-authored the framework,

and that Meredith illicitly modified Hion Systems' patent filings to expropriate your intellectual property after you refused her demands for majority ownership."

Liam stared at the text,

his heart hammering against his ribs.

"That’s... that’s complete perjury,

Julian,"

Liam whispered,

sweat breaking out across his forehead.

"I already pleaded guilty to corporate misrepresentation!

If I lie under oath in a federal court proceeding,

I will go to federal prison for years!"

Julian smiled,

a cold,

merciless expression that made Liam’s blood turn to ice.

"You are already facing ruin,

Liam,"

Julian said softly.

"Your house is gone.

Your fiancée abandoned you.

Your name is a punchline in the financial press.

Your sister is currently being celebrated as the revolutionary genius of the decade,

worth hundreds of millions,

while you rot in a rented hole on the edge of town."

Julian leaned closer,

his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.

"Nexus has forty corporate attorneys on retainer.

We will protect you.

We will claim you were coerced into your original guilty plea by Gerald Callaway's legal pressure.

With your affidavit,

we will file an emergency injunction to freeze Aetheris’s assets.

We will crush your sister’s company before her international expansion launch next week."

Liam gripped the edge of the table,

his knuckles turning white.

"And what about Meredith?"

Liam asked,

a bitter,

poisonous hatred flaring up in his eyes.

"She will lose everything,"

Julian promised smoothly.

"Her reputation,

her funding,

her company.

She will be tied up in federal litigation for the next five years.

By the time the trial ends,

Nexus will have swallowed her technology,

and she will be completely broke."

Two hours later,

Liam walked into a small,

cramped two-bedroom apartment located in a rundown residential building on the outskirts of the city.

The air inside smelled of stale tea and damp carpets.

My mother,

Eleanor Vance,

was sitting on a worn sofa,

her eyes red from crying,

staring at a daytime talk show on a small television.

My father,

Robert Vance,

sat at the kitchen table,

staring blankly at a pile of unpaid utility bills.

When Liam walked in,

Eleanor stood up immediately,

her face tightening with anxiety.

"Liam!"

she cried,

rushing over to grab his arms.

"Where have you been?!

The collection agency called again today!

They are threatening to freeze your father's pension!"

Liam pulled the stack of cash from his jacket pocket and slammed it onto the table.

"We don't have to worry about the collection agency anymore,

Mom,"

Liam declared,

his eyes burning with a manic,

unstable energy.

Robert looked at the money,

then looked up at his son,

his forehead furrowing with deep suspicion.

"Where did you get this money,

Liam?"

Robert asked,

his voice hollow and filled with dread.

"It doesn't matter where he got it,

Robert!"

Eleanor interrupted furiously,

snatching the money and clutching it to her chest like a lifeline.

"He got it to help this family!

Unlike your daughter,

who sits in her penthouse suite while her own parents suffer in poverty!"

"I met with Nexus Dynamics,"

Liam announced,

his chest puffing out with false confidence for the first time in months.

"They are going to help us take Meredith down.

They offered me half a million dollars to testify against her."

Robert slammed his fist onto the table,

the old wood rattling under the force.

"Are you insane,

Liam?!"

Robert yelled,

his face flushing red.

"You stole from her once,

and it destroyed your life!

Now you want to commit federal perjury to help a giant corporation ruin her?!"

"She destroyed me first,

Dad!"

Liam screamed back,

his face twisting in rage.

"She could have given me the code!

She could have let me have my company!

She chose to humiliate me in front of Sienna’s family!

She broke Mom’s heart!

She deserves to lose everything she built!"

Eleanor walked over to Liam,

wrapping her arms around his shoulders,

looking at him with the same blind,

destructive devotion she had shown his entire life.

"Do it,

Liam,"

Eleanor whispered,

her eyes cold and venomous.

"Do whatever you have to do.

She abandoned her own blood.

She turned her back on her mother.

Make her pay for what she did to us."

Robert looked at his wife and his son,

a look of profound disgust and utter heartbreak filling his face.

He slowly stood up,

shook his head in silence,

May you like

and walked into his bedroom,

closing the door between himself and the monstrous delusion his family had become.
