Chapter 6 - The Assembly of the True Builders

The sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the newly leased penthouse suite
located on the forty-second floor of the city's premier tech tower.
Below
life moved in endless streams of yellow taxis
bustling pedestrians
and distant sirens.
Inside
the air smelled of fresh paint
expensive leather
and polished mahogany.
This was the new headquarters of Aetheris Systems
the firm born from the ashes of Vidia's fraud.
I stood at the edge of the conference room
looking at the blank whiteboard that stretched across an entire wall.
Beside me stood Marcus
Gerald Callaway’s lead technical auditor
who had officially transitioned to serve as my interim Chief Operating Officer.
"The funding has cleared
Meredith
" Marcus said
holding a digital tablet with a subtle smile.
"Thirty million dollars in initial capital from Callaway Ventures
deposited into our primary operations account."
I looked down at the notification on my phone
confirming the eight-figure balance.
For years
I had built multi-million dollar infrastructure on a modest salary while my brother bought sports cars with stolen code.
Now
every dollar of capital was directly tied to my own vision and leadership.
"Have the team members arrived?" I asked
turning back to Marcus.
"They are waiting in the main lounge
" Marcus replied.
"All five of them."
I walked out of the conference room and down the glass-walled corridor toward the main lobby.
Standing there were five engineers from Hion Systems
the very colleagues who had worked alongside me in quiet obscurity for years.
There was Elena
a brilliant concurrency specialist who had been denied promotions three times because she refused to play office politics.
There was David
a senior database architect whose optimization algorithms saved Hion millions every quarter.
And three junior developers who had spent two years writing pristine code without receiving a single mention in company updates.
When they saw me walk into the lounge
the room went completely quiet.
Elena took a step forward
her eyes searching my face with a mixture of awe and residual disbelief.
"Meredith
" Elena whispered
her voice trembling slightly.
"When you called us two days ago
we thought you were joking.
We heard the news about Vidia
but we had no idea you were starting your own enterprise."
"I don't joke about systems
Elena
" I said
offering them a warm
genuine smile.
"I asked you all here because you are the finest engineers I have ever worked with.
At Hion
management treated us like interchangeable utility workers.
They took our contributions for granted
hid us behind polished executives
and paid us a fraction of what our work was worth."
David nodded solemnly
his jaw tightening as he remembered years of ignored performance reviews.
"At Aetheris Systems
" I continued
my voice ringing with complete conviction
"things will be entirely different.
Every single one of you will receive double your current base salary at Hion.
You will receive equity packages that vest over four years.
And every patent
every framework
and every module you design will bear your name in full public view."
The five engineers looked at each other
stunned into complete silence.
Elena covered her mouth with both hands
tears welling in her eyes.
"You're giving us equity?" David asked
his voice barely above a whisper.
"You are the true builders
David
" I answered firmly.
"Without your logic
without your dedication
there is no company.
I will never build my success on the backs of uncredited engineers."
Marcus stepped forward
handing each of them a leather-bound folder containing their new employment contracts.
"Welcome to Aetheris Systems
" Marcus announced.
Before anyone could sign
the heavy double glass doors of the elevator lobby chimed.
A security guard in a dark suit stepped out
looking visibly uncomfortable and tense.
"Ms. Vance
" the guard said nervously
addressing me directly.
"We have a situation downstairs in the main building lobby.
A man claiming to be your brother is refusing to leave.
He is demands to see you immediately."
The atmosphere in the room turned icy cold.
Elena and David looked at me with deep concern.
I adjusted the sleeves of my blazer
took a calm
measured breath
and looked at Marcus.
"Let's go downstairs
May you like
" I said quietly.
"It's time to set the final boundary."
