Chapter 13 - The Injunction of Malice

The main courtroom of the United States District Court for the Southern District was packed to standing room only.
Dozens of high-profile financial reporters,
corporate analysts,
and legal scholars filled the wooden benches.
The air was thick with tension,
heavy with the scent of leather folders,
expensive perfume,
and impending legal violence.
At the plaintiff’s table sat Julian Thorne,
surrounded by eight top-tier corporate litigation attorneys from Nexus Dynamics’ external counsel.
Beside Julian sat Liam Vance,
wearing a brand-new dark gray suit purchased with Nexus’s money.
Liam held his head high,
trying to project the air of a wronged founder seeking long-overdue justice,
though his hands twitched nervously beneath the edge of the table.
At the defense table sat Meredith Vance.
She wore a sharp,
tailored ivory suit,
her hair pulled back into a sleek,
professional knot.
Her expression was an impenetrable mask of absolute composure.
Beside her sat Gerald Callaway and Victoria,
Aetheris Systems’ lead trial counsel.
Presiding over the emergency hearing was Honorable Judge Marcus Evelyn,
a veteran jurist known throughout the circuit for his zero-tolerance policy toward corporate gamesmanship.
Judge Evelyn adjusted his glasses,
looked down from the bench,
and slammed his gavel down once.
The crack of the wood resonated through the silent room like a gunshot.
"This emergency hearing is now in session,"
Judge Evelyn announced,
his voice deep,
commanding,
and completely sharp.
"The matter before this court is an emergency motion filed by Nexus Dynamics for a preliminary injunction to halt all global operations,
data center deployments,
and commercial licensing of Aetheris Systems,
pending a full trial on alleged patent theft and trade secret misappropriation."
Julian Thorne’s lead attorney,
a tall,
silver-haired lawyer named Harrison Vance,
stood up slowly and adjusted his jacket.
"May it please the court,"
Harrison began,
his voice smooth,
practiced,
and filled with dramatic flair.
"My client,
Nexus Dynamics,
recently acquired the proprietary technical assets and intellectual property of Vidia Enterprises during its restructuring.
Upon deep diagnostic audit,
our technical teams made a shocking discovery."
Harrison paused,
turning his head to look directly at Meredith.
"We discovered that the core architecture currently being commercialized by Aetheris Systems under the name 'Aetheris Core' is,
in fact,
an exact duplicate of trade secrets originally developed by Vidia Enterprises under the leadership of its founding CEO,
Liam Vance."
A quiet murmur rippled through the gallery of press reporters.
"Furthermore,"
Harrison continued,
raising his voice to command the room,
"we have submitted a sworn affidavit from Mr. Liam Vance himself,
attesting under penalty of perjury that Meredith Vance—his sister—used her administrative access as a temporary consultant four years ago to illicitly siphon Vidia’s proprietary algorithms onto her personal repositories."
Judge Evelyn leaned forward,
looking down at the defense table.
"Ms. Victoria,"
Judge Evelyn said,
addressing Aetheris’s attorney.
"This is an extraordinary allegation backed by a sworn affidavit from the original founder.
How does the defense respond?"
Victoria stood up calmly,
her voice steady and entirely unbothered.
"Your Honor,
the defense responds by stating that this entire proceeding is a frivolous,
malicious attempt by Nexus Dynamics to execute a hostile takeover of a superior competitor through corporate intimidation and subornation of perjury."
Liam flinched violently at the word 'perjury',
his face paling slightly,
though Julian Thorne quickly patted Liam’s shoulder to keep him quiet.
"We request permission to call Mr. Liam Vance to the stand immediately,"
Victoria added smoothly.
"We intend to demonstrate that this affidavit is not worth the paper it is printed on."
Judge Evelyn nodded once.
"Mr. Vance,
take the stand."
Liam stood up,
swallowing hard,
his knees feeling weak as he walked toward the wooden witness box.
He raised his right hand,
swore to tell the truth,
the whole truth,
and nothing but the truth,
and sat down behind the microphone.
From the defense table,
Meredith looked at her brother.
She did not look at him with hatred,
nor with anger.
She looked at him with the cold,
analytical detachment of a scientist observing an experiment that had already failed.
Liam avoided her gaze entirely,
staring straight at the back wall of the courtroom.
Harrison walked over to the witness stand,
smiling encouragingly at his star witness.
"Mr. Vance,"
Harrison asked gently,
"please state for the court:
did you authorize Meredith Vance to take full ownership of the distributed queue code four years ago?"
Liam took a deep breath,
clenched his fists out of sight,
and leaned into the microphone.
"No,"
Liam declared,
his voice shaking slightly before he stabilized it.
"I hired her to perform basic IT maintenance.
She stole the architecture files from my personal server while I was asleep,
re-branded them under her name,
and used them to register patents at Hion Systems behind my back."
In the second row of the public gallery,
Eleanor Vance wiped a tear from her eye,
nodding her head vigorously in support of her son.
Harrison smiled triumphantly.
"Thank you,
Mr. Vance.
Your witness,
Counsel."
Victoria stood up from the defense table,
holding a single black digital tablet in her hand.
She didn't walk toward Liam.
Instead,
she remained standing beside Meredith,
her voice ringing with clear,
lethal calm throughout the silent courtroom.
"Mr. Vance,"
Victoria began softly.
"You just swore under oath that my client stole those files from your personal server four years ago.
Is that correct?"
"Yes,"
Liam answered firmly,
gaining confidence.
"That is correct."
"And you claim that the codebase you provided to Nexus Dynamics last week contains the authentic,
original version of that architecture?"
"Yes,"
Liam asserted.
"It is the original Vidia code."
Victoria turned to Judge Evelyn.
"Your Honor,
we request permission to project Defense Exhibit 104 onto the courtroom displays."
Judge Evelyn gestured with his hand.
"Granted."
The main monitors above the jury box and the judicial bench illuminated instantly,
displaying lines of dynamic,
high-level source code glowing in vibrant yellow and white text.
"Mr. Vance,"
Victoria said,
pointing to the screen.
"What you are looking at is the source code pulled directly from the hard drives Nexus Dynamics submitted to this court as evidence this morning."
Liam looked at the screen,
frowning,
his heart beginning to beat faster.
"Now,"
Victoria continued,
turning a page on her tablet,
"let us look at line 487 of that code."
She zoomed in on a specific section of the algorithm.
Deep within the mathematical logic was a single,
commented variable string that read:
PROPERTY_OF_MEREDITH_VANCE_HASH_SIGNATURE_8849_HONEYPOT_TRAP.
The courtroom erupted into instant,
deafening gasps.
Liam’s face went completely white.
Julian Thorne sat up straight,
his jaw dropping in sudden,
abject horror.
"Mr. Vance,"
Victoria asked,
May you like
her voice echoing like thunder across the room.
"Can you explain why the 'original Vidia code' you sold to Nexus Dynamics last week contains a cryptographic digital honeypot injected by my client into our European server nodes... exactly forty-eight hours ago?"
