Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Cage

The flight back to the field office was spent in absolute,
suffocating silence.
I clutched the encrypted drive to my chest,
Grant's recorded words echoing endlessly in my mind.
The real power is already inside your agency.
When we finally returned to the interrogation wing,
the sun was beginning to rise,
casting long,
sickly shadows across the linoleum floors.
I bypassed the debriefing room completely,
marching straight toward holding cell number three.
The guard saw the look in my eyes and stepped aside without a single word.
I unlocked the heavy metal door and stepped inside.
Grant was sitting on the edge of the steel cot,
still wearing his ruined,
expensive trousers,
his hands chained to the table.
He looked exhausted,
but when he saw me,
that familiar,
sickening smirk crawled across his face.
"Welcome back,
Agent Quinn,"
he sneered,
leaning back against the concrete wall.
"Did you have a fun night in Chicago?"
I walked slowly toward the table,
dropping the decrypted file folder onto the cold metal surface.
"It is over,
Grant,"
I said,
my voice dangerously calm.
"We have the ledger,
we have the routing numbers,
and we have the identities of your international buyers."
He glanced at the folder,
but his smirk did not fade.
"You have a fraction of the puzzle,"
he replied,
his eyes gleaming with dark amusement.
"You are so predictable,
Mara.
You always focus on the immediate threat,
and you never see the bigger picture."
"I saw enough to put you away for three consecutive life sentences,"
I countered,
slamming my hands on the table and leaning into his space.
"You will never see the outside of a federal supermax facility."
"Maybe,"
he whispered,
leaning forward until our faces were inches apart.
"But you won't live long enough to testify against me."
The sheer confidence in his voice sent a chilling ripple down my spine.
This wasn't empty posturing.
He knew something terrifying.
"What did you mean by your recording?"
I demanded,
refusing to let him see my fear.
"Who is the mole inside the FBI?"
Grant laughed,
a hollow,
soulless sound that filled the tiny cell.
"You still don't get it,
do you?"
he asked,
shaking his head in mock pity.
"I wasn't the one keeping tabs on you,
Mara.
I am just the money man.
The person watching you,
the person reporting your every move to the syndicate,
is the person who assigned you to this case in the first place."
My breath caught sharply in my throat.
My mind raced through the chain of command,
the senior agents,
the directors,
the people who had full access to my operational files.
"You are lying,"
I stated,
but my voice lacked conviction.
"Am I?"
Grant challenged,
his eyes locking onto mine with lethal intent.
"Ask yourself,
Mara.
Who approved the raid tonight?
Who knew exactly where you were going,
and exactly when you would arrive?"
The regional director.
Director Miller.
"He is going to tie up loose ends,
sweetheart,"
Grant whispered,
his voice a venomous hiss.
"And you are the biggest loose end of them all."
Before I could react,
May you like
the heavy steel door of the interrogation room suddenly swung open,
and the blaring sound of the facility's fire alarm began to scream through the hallways.
