Chapter 6 - The Steel Fortress

The flight to Chicago was a blur of adrenaline and cold anticipation.

I sat in the back of the heavily armored transport plane,

staring at the tactical maps glowing on my digital tablet.

The warehouse was located in an abandoned industrial sector,

surrounded by rotting train tracks and decaying factories.

It was the perfect place to hide a massive digital empire,

a place forgotten by the rest of the city.

Ortega sat across from me,

sharpening a tactical combat knife with rhythmic,

calculated strokes.

The metallic sound echoed in the loud cabin,

grounding me in the dangerous reality of our mission.

My shoulder still throbbed from where Grant had thrown me onto the kitchen floor,

but I pushed the pain deep down into my mind.

Pain was a distraction,

and tonight,

distraction meant death.

"We drop in two minutes,"

the pilot's voice crackled through our headsets,

sharp and urgent.

I secured the strap of my Kevlar helmet,

checking the loaded magazine of my primary assault rifle one last time.

The heavy rear doors of the transport opened,

letting in a violent rush of freezing Chicago wind.

The city lights looked like scattered embers in the dark below us.

"Listen up,"

the tactical commander shouted over the roaring wind,

pointing at a digital blueprint on the monitor.

"Thermal imaging shows at least twelve armed hostiles inside the perimeter,

heavily equipped with military-grade hardware."

This was not a simple server farm,

it was a fortress.

"They will protect those servers with their lives,"

I added,

my voice echoing through the comms channel.

"If they wipe the mainframes before we extract the data,

Grant walks free,

and the Ghost Protocol disappears forever."

Ortega nodded,

his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute trust.

"We take the control room first,"

he said,

racking the slide of his weapon.

The transport touched down on the roof of an adjacent building with a heavy thud.

We moved out into the freezing rain like shadows,

grappling hooks launching silently into the night.

We swung across the terrifying gap between the buildings,

landing gracefully on the rusted roof of the syndicate's warehouse.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs,

each beat a reminder of the lies my husband had fed me for years.

Every step I took was a step toward destroying everything he had built.

We positioned explosive breaching charges on the reinforced skylights,

waiting for the countdown.

"Three,"

Ortega whispered into the comms,

"two,"

he raised his hand,

"one."

The explosion shattered the night,

raining thousands of glass shards down into the warehouse below.

We dropped through the smoke and fire,

rappelling down into the heart of the beast.

Gunfire erupted instantly,

deafening bursts of automatic weapons tearing through the air.

Bullets sparked against the metal catwalks,

but our tactical team moved with lethal precision.

I fired three controlled bursts,

dropping a masked mercenary who was aiming a shotgun at Ortega's back.

"Clear right!"

I shouted,

my voice completely devoid of fear.

We pushed forward through the maze of towering server racks,

the blinking blue lights casting eerie shadows on the concrete floor.

This was Grant's real world,

a world built on stolen data,

ruined lives,

May you like

and endless greed.

And I was going to burn it all down to the ground.
