Chapter 15 - The Interrogation of Shadows

We kicked the double doors open with coordinated,

explosive force,

stepping into the opulent,

dimly lit expanse of the private VIP lounge.

The room was completely soundproofed,

the deafening music of the club outside reduced to a faint,

muffled vibration.

Plush leather couches lined the walls,

expensive crystal decanters rested on glass tables,

and the air was thick with the smell of expensive cigars and imported vodka.

Three men sat around a massive circular booth,

their dark suits perfectly tailored,

their expressions shifting instantly from arrogant relaxation to absolute,

terrified shock.

In the center of the booth sat a tall,

lean man with completely silver hair,

a jagged,

terrifying scar running down the left side of his face.

The Reaper.

Before any of them could draw their weapons,

Ortega fired two rapid,

suppressed shots,

shattering the expensive crystal decanters on the table,

showering the men in sharp glass and expensive alcohol.

"Nobody moves!"

Ortega roared,

his weapon trained directly on the chest of the heavily scarred man.

"Hands on the table,

right now,

or I paint this beautiful leather with your brains."

The two bodyguards slowly raised their hands,

their eyes darting nervously toward the exits,

but the Reaper simply smiled,

a cold,

chilling expression that did not reach his dead,

gray eyes.

"Agent Quinn,"

the Reaper spoke,

his voice a slow,

rasping drawl with a heavy Eastern European accent.

"I must admit,

I did not expect you to be this aggressive,

this wonderfully proactive."

I walked forward,

my pistol aimed perfectly at the center of his forehead,

my finger resting lightly on the trigger.

"You threatened me,"

I said,

my voice as cold and unforgiving as a winter storm.

"I decided to save you the trouble of hunting me down."

"You are making a grave mistake,"

one of the bodyguards snarled,

shifting his weight slightly,

preparing to lunge.

Without breaking eye contact with the Reaper,

I shifted my aim instantly,

firing a single shot into the bodyguard's kneecap.

The man screamed in sheer agony,

collapsing onto the floor,

clutching his shattered leg as dark blood quickly stained the expensive carpet.

The Reaper's smile vanished entirely,

replaced by a look of genuine,

startled caution.

"I am not playing games,"

I stated,

aiming the weapon back at the assassin's face,

my hand completely steady.

"I burned your financial network to the ground,

I exposed your domestic launderer,

and now,

I am going to tear the rest of your syndicate apart."

"You have nothing,"

the Reaper spat,

leaning forward slightly,

trying to regain his terrifying aura of control.

"You are a rogue agent,

disavowed by your own government,

hunted by your own director."

"Director Miller is a traitor,"

Ortega interjected,

stepping closer to the table,

his physical presence massive and intimidating.

"And we know he is taking orders directly from Ghost Protocol leadership."

"Where is the main server?"

I demanded,

pressing the hot muzzle of my pistol directly against the Reaper's forehead.

"Where is the physical location of the syndicate's core database?"

"If I tell you,"

the Reaper laughed,

a bitter,

hollow sound,

"they will kill my entire family,

they will erase my existence."

"If you do not tell me,"

I whispered,

leaning down so he could see the absolute lack of mercy in my eyes,

"I will erase your existence right here,

on this ridiculously expensive couch,

and I won't lose a single second of sleep over it."

The silence in the room was deafening,

broken only by the pathetic whimpering of the bleeding bodyguard on the floor.

The Reaper stared into my eyes,

searching for weakness,

searching for the hesitation of a law enforcement officer bound by the rules.

He found nothing but cold,

limitless determination.

"They are not in Chicago anymore,"

the Reaper finally confessed,

his voice trembling slightly,

his arrogant facade completely broken by the reality of his impending death.

"Where?"

I pressed,

pushing the gun harder against his skin.

"A private,

heavily fortified compound,"

he stammered,

sweat finally breaking out across his scarred forehead.

"In the mountains of Wyoming,

a massive underground bunker disguised as an emergency survival shelter."

I stared at him for a long moment,

processing the tactical nightmare of attacking an isolated,

military-grade bunker.

"Give me the exact coordinates,"

I demanded.

He reached slowly,

carefully into his jacket pocket,

pulling out a small,

encrypted digital tablet,

and slid it across the glass table toward me.

"It is all in there,"

he whispered,

his spirit entirely broken.

I grabbed the tablet,

sliding it into my tactical vest,

and took a slow step back from the table.

"If this is a trap,"

I warned him,

lowering my weapon slightly,

"I will come back,

and I will finish this."

Ortega and I backed out of the VIP lounge,

our weapons raised,

leaving the broken assassin and his bleeding men behind in the dim,

flickering light.

We had the location,

we had the funds,

and we had the element of absolute surprise.

The final battle was no longer a desperate fight for survival in the dirty streets of Chicago.

It was going to be a full-scale assault on the fortress of Ghost Protocol itself,
