Chapter 3 - The Digital Breadcrumbs

The field office was a freezing,

fluorescent-lit cavern of endless activity.

It was four in the morning,

but the cyber division never slept.

I sat at my workstation,

a massive dual-monitor setup that felt like the only safe place left in my life.

A cup of terrible cafeteria coffee sat untouched next to my keyboard.

Grant's seized devices were locked in the evidence room,

but the forensic team had already cloned his hard drives.

I was staring at a raw data dump of his personal laptop.

Ortega pulled up a chair next to me,

dropping a thick file folder onto the desk.

"He is in interrogation room three,"

Ortega said,

rubbing his tired eyes.

"He is demanding a lawyer,

playing the victim,

saying you had a mental breakdown."

"Let him talk,"

I replied,

my fingers flying rapidly across the mechanical keyboard.

"The data won't lie.

People lie,

but code is always honest."

I ran a deep decryption protocol,

targeting a hidden partition on Grant's hard drive.

It was heavily encrypted,

using a military-grade algorithm that a civilian businessman should never possess.

"He is smart,"

I muttered,

watching the progress bar slowly crawl across the screen.

"He used a cascading encryption method.

If we use the wrong brute-force key,

it wipes the entire drive."

"Can you bypass it?"

Ortega asked,

leaning closer to the monitor.

"I lived with the man for four years,"

I said,

a bitter smile forming on my lips.

"He has an ego.

He thinks he is untouchable.

He always uses a variation of his first successful company's incorporation date,

combined with a string of special characters."

I typed in a complex alphanumeric string,

my heart pounding slightly in my chest.

I hit enter.

The screen flashed red for a terrifying second,

then turned a calm,

soothing green.

Access granted.

"Got you,"

I whispered,

a wave of triumph washing over me.

The screen populated with hundreds of nested folders.

I clicked on the master directory,

and my breath hitched in my throat.

"Rafe,"

I said,

my voice tight.

"Look at this."

Ortega leaned in,

his eyes scanning the endless rows of financial ledgers,

IP addresses,

and cryptocurrency wallet keys.

"These aren't just hidden assets,"

Ortega said,

his tone shifting to absolute professionalism.

"These are routing numbers for offshore shell companies."

I opened a spreadsheet labeled 'Project Olympus',

and the sheer scale of the operation became clear.

Millions of US dollars were being moved,

laundered through fake tech startups,

and funneled into untraceable digital wallets.

"He isn't just hiding money from me,"

I concluded,

the horrifying truth finally taking shape.

"He is washing money for someone else.

Someone massive."

I cross-referenced one of the IP addresses listed in his ledger with the FBI central database.

The system churned for a moment,

then a bright red warning banner flashed across my screen.

Classified Operation: Operation Blackout.

"That is our active case,"

Ortega said,

his voice dropping to an anxious whisper.

"That is the Eastern European ransomware syndicate we have been tracking for eight months."

The puzzle pieces slammed together in my mind with a sickening force.

Grant wasn't just an abusive husband.

He was a financial fixer for the exact criminal organization I was actively investigating.

That was why he married me.

That was why he kept me close.

That was why he always wanted to know about my cases.

I was his inside source,

and I had been completely blind to it.

A cold,

terrifying rage began to build inside me.

I had slept next to a man who was actively selling out my country,

sabotaging my career,

and using my life as a shield.

"We need to tear this entire network down,"

I said,

my voice cold as ice.

"And we are going to start with the people who helped him."

Because I suddenly realized,

there was a massive gap in Grant's financial history.

May you like

A gap that could only be explained by someone close to me accepting bribes to keep quiet.

Someone like my mother.
