Chapter 2 - The Breach and the Fall

The heavy thud of boots hitting the front porch echoed through the house.
Grant froze,
his eyes darting toward the front hallway.
"What is that?"
he demanded,
his voice cracking with sudden fear.
"That,"
I said,
smoothing my shirt,
"is the real world."
Before he could move another inch,
the heavy oak front door was smashed open with a deafening crash.
The sound of splintering wood made my mother scream,
a high-pitched wail of pure terror.
"FBI!"
a booming voice commanded,
echoing off the living room walls.
"Stay where you are!
Show your hands!"
Heavy footsteps rushed down the hallway,
and within seconds,
the kitchen was flooded with agents clad in dark tactical gear.
Assault rifles were raised,
flashlights cut through the darkness,
and the chaotic energy of the raid filled the space.
Rafael Ortega stepped through the line of agents,
his face a mask of furious concentration.
His dark eyes immediately found me,
scanning my face,
my posture,
searching for injuries.
"I'm okay,
Rafe,"
I said softly,
nodding to confirm my status.
Ortega's gaze shifted to Grant,
and the fury in his eyes intensified.
"Grant Sullivan,"
Ortega barked,
his voice echoing with absolute authority.
"Get on the ground.
Now."
Grant was trembling,
his hands raised awkwardly in the air,
his arrogant demeanor completely shattered.
"There is a misunderstanding,"
Grant stammered,
backing away until he hit the kitchen counter.
"I live here.
This is my house.
My wife is just overreacting."
"Ground!
Now!"
two tactical agents shouted simultaneously,
closing the distance in an instant.
Grant fell to his knees,
the expensive fabric of his trousers tearing against the kitchen tiles.
An agent grabbed his arms,
forcing them behind his back with practiced efficiency.
The sharp,
metallic click of handcuffs echoed in the room,
sounding like absolute victory.
My mother was weeping hysterically,
clutching the edge of the sink as if it could save her from this nightmare.
"What are you doing to him?"
she cried out,
tears streaming down her wrinkled face.
"He is a good man!
Mara,
tell them to stop!"
I walked over to my mother,
my expression completely unreadable.
"He is not a good man,
Mom,"
I said,
my voice devoid of emotion.
"He is a suspect in a federal cybercrime investigation,
and he just assaulted a federal agent."
I turned away from her,
leaving her to process the destruction of her perfect illusion.
Ortega walked over to me,
handing me a cold pack from a tactical medical kit.
"You hit the button,"
he said quietly,
making sure the other agents couldn't hear.
"I told you he was dangerous."
"You were right,"
I admitted,
pressing the cold pack to my throbbing shoulder.
"He isn't just abusive,
Rafe.
He is terrified.
He was asking me highly specific questions about tracing digital assets."
Ortega’s eyes narrowed,
the investigator in him taking over completely.
"He tried to get into your Bureau case?"
"Yes,"
I confirmed,
watching as the agents hauled Grant to his feet.
Grant looked at me,
his eyes filled with venom and desperation.
"You are going to regret this,
Mara,"
he spat,
struggling against the grip of the agents.
"You have no idea what you are messing with."
"Get him out of here,"
Ortega ordered,
waving a dismissive hand.
As Grant was dragged out the front door,
into the flashing lights of the armored vehicles,
the house suddenly felt incredibly empty.
But the real work was just beginning.
I needed his laptop.
I needed his phone.
I needed to tear his digital life apart piece by piece,
until I found every single secret he was trying to hide.
I walked out of the kitchen,
leaving my mother sobbing in the dark,
and headed straight for the guest bedroom where Grant had set up his home office.
Tonight,
May you like
the abused wife died,
and the FBI cyber investigator took full control.
