Chapter 5 - The Gala Confrontation

The ballroom at the Four Seasons was blinding with crystal chandeliers,
overflowing champagne towers,
and the hushed chatter of Boston’s highest elite.
Grant stood near the center stage,
surrounded by a circle of wealthy venture capitalists and municipal politicians.
Vanessa stood at his side,
radiant in a red backless gown,
holding a flute of expensive champagne as she expertly managed the conversation with reporters.
"Grant’s vision for Harborview Tower is going to completely redefine the city’s skyline,"
Vanessa was telling a senior editor from the Wall Street Journal as I stepped through the double mahogany doors of the ballroom.
"It’s not just a building; it’s a monument to modern ambition."
"A monument built on stolen blueprints, Vanessa?"
my voice rang out,
not loud or screeching,
but carrying a crisp,
unmistakable clarity that caused the surrounding conversations to instantly die down.
The circle of investors turned.
Vanessa froze,
her glass stopping halfway to her lips.
Grant turned slowly,
his eyes widening in genuine shock as he registered my presence.
For a second,
his arrogant composure shattered,
replaced by a flash of raw panic before he quickly recovered and put on a tight, fake smile.
"Ellie,"
Grant said,
stepping forward in an attempt to intercept me before I reached the center of the room.
"This is a private corporate event.
You shouldn't be here.
Let me call you a car so we can talk privately—"
"I don't need a car, Grant,"
I said clearly,
stopping three feet away from him,
my posture perfect,
my gaze holding his with terrifying intensity.
"And I certainly don't need to speak to you in private ever again."
The crowd hushed completely,
guests leaning in from every corner of the room,
sensing the sudden, explosive drama unfolding in front of the press cameras.
Vanessa stepped up beside Grant,
her eyes flashing with venom despite her sweet, corporate tone.
"Ellie, please,"
Vanessa said loudly enough for the reporters to hear,
trying to play the sympathetic professional.
"We know this transition has been emotionally difficult for you.
Infertility and marital strain take a heavy toll on a woman's mental state,
but causing a public scene at Grant's career peak is just desperate."
A murmur swept through the room.
Vanessa was trying to execute a character assassination,
framing me as an unhinged,
grieving woman driven mad by my inability to give Grant an heir.
It was a cruel, low blow designed to humiliate me completely.
I didn't flinch.
I looked directly at Vanessa,
a faint, pitying smile touching my lips.
"My mental state is perfectly sound, Vanessa,"
I said softly,
my voice carrying across the silent ballroom.
"Though I doubt Grant's financial state will be by tomorrow morning."
Before Grant could respond,
a tall man in a dark suit stepped out from the crowd behind me,
holding a thick white legal envelope.
He walked directly past Grant and handed the documents straight to Vanessa Cole.
"Vanessa Cole, you are officially served with a third-party subpoena for corporate fraud and forgery in the matter of Vance versus Mercer Urban Group,"
the process server announced in a loud, clear voice.
He then turned to Grant,
handing him a second, identical envelope.
"Grant Mercer, you are served with an emergency judicial injunction freezing all assets, development rights, and investor solicitations for the Harborview Tower project, effective immediately."
Gasps erupted across the room.
Flashbulbs began popping wildly as photojournalists rushed forward to capture the look of total horror on Grant’s face.
Grant stared at the legal documents in his hands,
his face draining of all color as he read the court order stamped by the Superior Court judge.
"What... what is this?"
Grant stammered,
his hands visibly shaking as he looked up at me in disbelief.
"You froze Harborview?
Are you out of your mind?
You’re destroying the company!"
"I'm not destroying the company, Grant,"
I said, leaning in slightly so only he and Vanessa could hear my final, quiet words over the chaos of the flashing cameras.
"I'm taking back what belongs to me.
And unlike you... I never leave my real assets behind."
I turned on my heel,
my emerald silk dress sweeping gracefully behind me,
and walked out of the Four Seasons ballroom without looking back once.
Behind me,
the sound of shouting reporters and Grant’s frantic voice trying to control the damage echoed into the night.
When I stepped outside into the cool air,
I placed my hand gently over my stomach,
feeling a warm wave of calm wash over me.

The battle for my legacy had just begun,
but for the first time in four years,
