Chapter 3 - The Legal Ambush

By eight o'clock the following morning,

I was sitting on the top floor of a high-rise office building in downtown Boston,

looking out at the gray horizon of the harbor.

Across the polished mahogany desk sat Victoria Sterling,

the most feared corporate litigator in the Northeast,

and a woman who had built her formidable career by dismantling arrogant billionaires piece by piece.

Victoria pushed a steaming cup of black coffee toward me,

her sharp grey eyes assessing my exhausted face and the small leather suitcase sitting beside my chair.

"You look like you haven't slept in thirty-six hours, Ellie,"

Victoria said,

opening a thick manila folder on her desk.

"I haven't,"

I replied,

taking a small sip of the hot coffee.

"Grant asked for a divorce last night.

He served me with a draft agreement prepared by Daniel Vance,

offering ten million to quietly walk away."

Victoria let out a short,

unimpressed snort,

leaning back in her leather executive chair.

"Ten million?

For a company currently valued at 2.4 billion dollars prior to its public filing?

Grant Mercer is even more delusional than I thought."

"He believes I signed away my forty-nine percent equity during the 2023 corporate restructuring,"

I explained,

pulling the original leather sketchbook and founding charter documents out of my bag and placing them on her desk.

"He thinks the voting trust agreement gives him absolute authority to freeze me out."

Victoria leaned forward,

her long manicured fingers instantly flipping through the yellowed pages of my early architectural designs and the notarized signatures from six years ago.

A slow,

dangerous smile spread across her lips.

"Did you sign the 2023 restructuring documents in the presence of an independent notary, Ellie?"

she asked softly.

"No,"

I answered firmly.

"Grant brought the papers home late one night after I had just returned from the hospital following my third miscarriage.

I was heavily medicated on painkillers and hormones.

He told me they were routine insurance forms for the estate.

He notarized them later using his in-house corporate notary,

Vanessa Cole."

Victoria's smile widened into something truly predatory.

"Vanessa Cole signed off as the independent legal witness?"

"Yes,"

I nodded.

"She was the chief legal compliance officer before he promoted her to communications director."

Victoria slammed the folder shut with a satisfying clap that echoed through the quiet office.

"That isn't just a conflict of interest, my dear.

That is outright corporate fraud,

forgery,

and a breach of fiduciary duty.

If Grant tries to move forward with the IPO using those restructured filings,

the Securities and Exchange Commission will shut down Mercer Urban Group before lunchtime."

I took a deep breath,

feeling a heavy weight slowly lifting from my chest,

replaced by a cold,

calculating resolve.

"I don't just want my financial share, Victoria,"

I said,

my voice steady and firm.

"I want the intellectual property rights to the Harborview Tower project.

That was my dream.

I spent three years designing every curve of that building.

Grant took my blueprints,

put his name on them,

and passed them off to the city board as his masterpiece."

Victoria watched me intently,

nodding slowly.

"We can freeze the Harborview construction within forty-eight hours with an emergency injunction,"

she said,

her tone sharp and decisive.

"Grant will be forced to explain to his primary investors why his lead architect and co-owner is suing him for fraud."

She leaned across the desk,

her eyes searching mine.

"Are you ready for this war, Ellie?

Grant and Vanessa will throw everything they have at you.

They will try to paint you as a bitter,

unhinged ex-wife who is jealous of his success."

I rested my hand lightly over my stomach,

feeling an incredible, quiet strength blooming deep within me.

"Let them try,"

I said quietly.

May you like

"They think I am weak because I kept silent for four years.

They are about to learn the difference between silence and submission."
