Chapter 13 - Vanessa's Downfall

Two days later,

the legal storm broke with merciless force over Vanessa Cole.

At ten o'clock on a rainy Thursday morning,

four federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission walked into the lobby of Mercer Urban Group.

They carried federal warrants for corporate embezzlement,

wire fraud,

and grand larceny.

Vanessa was sitting in her office on the thirty-eighth floor,

frantically packing her designer handbags and attempting to clear her encrypted hard drives.

The glass doors swung open,

and the lead federal agent stepped inside,

displaying his badge.

"Vanessa Cole?"

the agent asked coldly.

Vanessa turned pale,

dropping a box of files onto her desk.

"What... what is this?"

she stammered,

backing toward the window.

"You have no right to be here!"

"Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud,

forgery of legal instruments,

and the unlawful conversion of four million dollars in corporate assets,"

the agent announced loudly,

his voice echoing through the open floor plan for every remaining employee to hear.

Before she could speak,

the agents stepped forward,

pulling her arms behind her back and clicking silver handcuffs securely around her wrists.

"No! Let go of me!"

Vanessa shrieked,

thrashing wildly as her luxury handbag spilled onto the floor.

"Grant Mercer authorized those transfers!

He told me to do it!

He is the CEO!

Arrest him, not me!"

"Mr. Mercer's financial records have been seized,"

the agent replied calmly,

guiding her firmly toward the elevator.

"You can make your statement at the federal building."

News cameras were already waiting outside on the sidewalk as Vanessa was escorted out in handcuffs.

Her hair was messy,

her eyes wide with terror,

and her face stained with tears as she ducked her head to hide from the flashing lights.

The mistress who had boasted about choosing Grant and taking my place was now being paraded before the world as a convicted fraudster.

I watched the live broadcast from my new corner office at Vance Architectural Design,

holding a warm cup of herbal tea.

Victoria Sterling entered the room,

placing a signed court document on my desk.

"Vanessa tried to offer a plea deal by testifying against Grant,"

Victoria informed me with a sharp smile.

"So Grant's legal team immediately submitted recorded phone calls showing Vanessa initiated the offshore transfers herself."

I shook my head slowly,

feeling no pity,

only the absolute satisfaction of justice being served.

"They turned on each other the moment the water rose,"

May you like

I said quietly.

"That is what happens when a relationship is built on betrayal."
