Chapter 20 - The Crown on the Skyline

The evening sky over Boston was painted in breathtaking hues of violet,
gold,
and crimson as thousands of distinguished guests gathered for the grand opening of Harborview Tower.
The sixty-story architectural marvel stood at the edge of the harbor,
its sweeping glass facade reflecting the twilight waters like a colossal diamond rising from the ocean.
World-renowned architects,
state governors,
foreign dignitaries,
and international media outlets filled the grand atrium.
A massive golden plaque was permanently mounted into the marble wall of the main entrance,
engraved with the words:
“Harborview Tower. Designed, Built, and Realized by Ellie Vance. Dedicated to the Strength of Independent Women Everywhere.”
I stood on the private sky-deck on the sixty-first floor,
looking out through the floor-to-ceiling glass panels at the panoramic view of the entire city.
I wore an exquisite floor-length dark emerald gown,
a simple diamond necklace gracing my collarbone.
Beside me stood Clara,
now three years old,
wearing a cute matching green dress,
holding my hand and gazing out at the twinkling lights of the city below.
Victoria Sterling walked out onto the sky-deck,
holding two glasses of vintage champagne.
She handed one to me,
clinking her glass gently against mine.
"To the queen of Boston's skyline,"
Victoria toasted with a radiant, proud smile.
"To absolute freedom,"
I replied,
taking a small, celebratory sip of the cold champagne.
Below us,
the city lights stretched out endlessly,
representing years of hard work,
relentless battles,
and unyielding perseverance.
I remembered the night this journey began—standing barefoot on a cold marble bathroom floor,
holding a pregnancy test with two pink lines,
listening to my husband whisper "I choose you" to another woman through the shadows.
On that terrifying, heartbreaking night,
I had felt as though my world was ending.
I had felt small,
betrayed,
and utterly alone.
I didn't know then that the night my marriage died was the exact night my real life began.
I didn't know that the tiny heartbeat inside me would become the anchor that kept me standing through every storm.
Grant Mercer had chosen his mistress,
his ego,
and his greed.
He had chosen a shortcut that led him to complete ruin.
I had chosen my truth,
my talent,
and my child.
I had built an empire not out of vengeance,
but out of love,
integrity,
and unwavering self-respect.
Clara tugged gently on my hand,
pointing up at the stars glittering bright through the glass ceiling above us.
"Mommy,"
Clara asked in her sweet, clear voice,
"did you build this big, beautiful house for us?"
I knelt down on the polished hardwood floor,
wrapping my arms around my daughter,
holding her close against my heart.
"Yes, my sweet girl,"
I whispered into her soft hair,
looking out at the magnificent tower that bore our name.
"I built this for us.
So you will always know that no matter who walks away from you,
you have the power to build your own world."
Clara smiled,
resting her head on my shoulder as the golden lights of the city sparkled around us.
I stood up,
holding my daughter firmly against my hip,
and looked out over the skyline I now owned.
The silence was no longer heavy with grief.
It was filled with peace,
May you like
triumph,
and an everlasting legacy that no one could ever take away.
