Chapter 15 - The New Foundation

Six months later,

spring bloomed across Boston,

turning the city parks vibrant green and filling the air with the sweet scent of cherry blossoms.

The waterfront site of Harborview Tower was filled with hundreds of guests,

construction workers,

city leaders,

and news crews gathered for the official groundbreaking ceremony.

A massive banner hung across the entrance reading:

“Harborview Tower: Designed and Developed by Vance Architectural Design.”

I stood on the raised wooden stage,

wearing a beautiful lavender maternity dress that comfortably highlighted my seven-month baby bump.

I was radiant,

healthy,

and surrounded by a team of talented young architects who respected and admired my leadership.

Victoria Sterling stood beside me,

holding a silver shovel wrapped in a silk ribbon.

"Look at the crowd,"

Victoria said softly,

her eyes shining with pride.

"You didn't just rebuild your life, Ellie.

You built an empire that no man can ever touch."

I smiled,

looking out over the sea of smiling faces,

feeling an overwhelming sense of peace settle over my heart.

Far in the back of the crowd,

standing behind the security barricades,

a lonely figure watched in silence.

It was Grant Mercer.

He was working as a junior consultant for a small suburban firm,

living in a tiny rented apartment on the outskirts of the city.

He wore a cheap, faded suit,

his face aged by stress and regret.

He watched me through the crowd,

his eyes fixed on my visible belly,

the realization of everything he had lost burning like acid in his throat.

He saw the woman he had discarded standing as a titan of the city.

He saw the child he had called a failure thriving under her care.

And he knew that no matter how many years passed,

he would forever be a ghost in the story of our success.

Mayor Walsh stepped up to the microphone,

his voice booming across the loudspeaker.

"Today, we break ground on a new era for Boston!"

Mayor Walsh announced.

"Led by the vision, resilience, and genius of Ellie Vance!"

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

I stepped forward,

taking the silver shovel in my hands.

I looked down at my bump,

feeling a strong,

playful kick from my baby inside.

I smiled,

whispering softly to my unborn child as the cameras flashed around us.

"We did it, my love,"

I whispered.

May you like

"We built our own foundation."

I pushed the shovel into the rich earth,
