Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Prodigal Son

The echo of Ryan's hysterical confession hung heavily in the air,
leaving everyone inside the courtroom in total shock.
Judge Henderson stared down at Ryan with cold,
unyielding judgment,
her expression filled with utter disdain for his display of arrogance and deceit.
"Mr.
Ryan Cross,"
Judge Henderson said,
her voice ringing with stern legal finality,
"you have not only attempted to pervert the course of justice in this court,
but you have explicitly confessed to grand larceny,
forgery,
and conspiracy on the official court record."
Ryan slumped forward onto his desk,
his head buried in his hands as loud,
strained sobs began to break from his chest.
His attorney,
Victor Vance,
silently packed his leather briefcase,
distancing himself physically from his client to avoid being dragged down into the legal disaster.
My mother Evelyn began to weep hysterically in the gallery,
her hands clutching her face as she realized that both of her children were now lost to her—one by her own cruel betrayal,
and the other by his own criminal greed.
"By virtue of the powers vested in this court,"
Judge Henderson declared,
"the secondary will presented by the plaintiff is hereby declared null,
void,
and fraudulent.
The original estate structure established by Arthur Cross is reinstated in full,
confirming Captain Claire Cross as the sole executor of the estate and the rightful controlling shareholder of Cross Meridian Systems."
I closed my eyes,
taking a deep,
quiet breath as the final legacy of my father was finally secured from destruction.
I could almost feel his presence beside me,
his quiet approval echoing through my heart:
You protected the company,
Claire.
And you kept your unit safe.
"Furthermore,"
Judge Henderson continued,
looking over at the United States Marshals standing at the back of the room,
"I am issuing an immediate order for the remand of Ryan Cross into federal custody.
Federal authorities will process charges regarding corporate fraud,
document forgery,
and making false statements to federal investigators."
Two armed Marshals stepped forward immediately,
marching down the aisle with pair of heavy steel handcuffs held ready in their hands.
They grabbed Ryan by his arms,
pulling him up from his chair despite his weak,
desperate attempts to resist.
"Claire!
Claire,
please!"
Ryan shrieked out as the cold metal cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
"Tell them to stop!
We are family!
Mom,
tell her to help me!
You can't let them take me to prison!"
Evelyn reached out her hand toward him as he was dragged past her,
screaming his name through her tears,
but she had no power left to save him.
I stood up from the defense table,
my posture straight,
my expression calm and steady as I looked my brother directly in the eyes one last time.
"You destroyed this family the moment you used Dad's memory as a weapon,
Ryan,"
I said,
my voice cold and unwavering.
"You made your choice.
Now you will face the consequences."
Ryan was dragged through the heavy rear doors of the courtroom,
his hysterical screams echoing down the hallway until the doors swung shut,
cutting off the sound completely.
The gallery erupted into a flurry of motion as reporters rushed out to break the massive news story to the national media.
The prosecutor walked over to our table,
extending his hand toward me with an expression of deep,
sincere remorse.
"Captain Cross,"
the prosecutor said quietly,
"I owe you a profound apology.
I allowed myself to be blinded by manufactured evidence,
and I deeply regret questioning your honorable service to this nation."
I accepted his handshake firmly,
giving him a professional nod.
"The truth always finds a way out,"
I replied smoothly.
"Just make sure you prosecute my brother with the same intensity you brought against me."
Daniel Mercer let out a long,
exhausted sigh of relief,
packing away our legal files with a triumphant grin on his face.
"We did it,
Claire,"
Daniel said,
shaking his head in awe.
"I have never seen a courtroom turn around so completely in my entire thirty years of legal practice."
"We won the court battle,
Daniel,"
I said softly,
May you like
looking out the tall windows as Major Ethan Walker waited for me near the entrance.
"But Cross Meridian Systems still has traitors inside its executive board who helped Ryan execute those transfers.
