Chapter 17 - The Fortress of Secrets

We touched down on the polished marble floor of the grand central foyer,
our weapons instantly sweeping the vast room in perfect 360-degree tactical coverage.
Alarm sirens screamed through the corridors,
their red emergency lights flashing against heavy oil paintings and antique tapestries.
Shouts rang out from the surrounding balconies as Mercer's private mercenaries scrambled to assemble a defensive line.
"Contact front!"
Ethan barked,
firing three controlled bursts up toward the second-floor mezzanine.
Two heavily armed guards fell back over the ornate railing,
their rifles clattering loudly against the marble below.
"Delta Team,
hold the central atrium!"
I ordered,
reloading my weapon with swift,
muscle-memory speed.
"Ethan and I are moving down to the subterranean vault level!
That is where Mercer kept his master servers!"
We sprinted down a broad spiral staircase,
moving past wide hallways lined with high-tech security doors and electronic keypad locks.
The air grew noticeably cooler as we descended deep beneath the stone foundation of the estate.
At the end of a long concrete corridor stood a massive steel blast door,
its reinforced lock mechanism glowing red on an encrypted digital display terminal.
Beside the panel,
a digital countdown timer was ticking rapidly downward:
05:42...
05:41...
05:40...
"They activated an emergency hard-drive purge protocol!"
Ethan exclaimed,
running up to the terminal and inspecting the glowing circuitry.
"In less than six minutes,
high-voltage thermite charges will ignite inside the server racks,
melting every single drive and destroying all evidence of the Aegis network!"
"Not if I override it,"
I said,
stepping up to the control panel and pulling a small hardware drive from my tactical vest.
It was the master bypass key my father had secretly coded years ago,
designed to access Cross Meridian Systems' encrypted subsystem protocols.
I jammed the drive into the maintenance slot,
and the terminal screen flickered violently,
switching from red to amber as lines of code began streaming rapidly across the display.
"SYSTEM RECOGNIZED,"
a automated voice echoed from the wall speakers.
"WELCOME,
EXECUTOR CLAIRE CROSS.
ENTER ACCESS PASSPHRASE."
My hands hovered over the digital keyboard,
my mind racing back to the quiet nights I had spent at my father's bedside during his final weeks.
He had held my hand,
his eyes filled with deep pride and quiet love,
and whispered a phrase he had repeated throughout my entire childhood.
I typed the words slowly,
deliberately,
and with absolute conviction:
HONOR BEFORE EMPIRE.
The screen flashed brilliant green,
and the heavy steel locking bolts inside the blast door retracted with a deep,
resounding hydraulic hiss.
The digital countdown timer froze instantly at 04:12,
disarming the thermite charges inside the vault.
The blast door slid open slowly,
revealing a massive room filled with rows of glowing black server racks,
cooling units,
and high-speed satellite transmission terminals.
We stepped into the vault,
feeling the hum of terabytes of data echoing through the cold air.
"We got it,"
Ethan whispered,
a breath of immense relief escaping his chest.
"Every offshore transfer,
every bribed politician,
every illegal weapons transaction,
May you like
and every single name connected to Aegis Holdings...
is sitting right inside these servers."
